How much should I ask for? Fellow students looking for alterations

I'm a law student, and some of my peers have asked if I could do some alterations for them. Hemming skirts and pants, mostly, which I don't mind doing. However, I don't necessarily want to just *give away* my skills, time, and materials, I figured I could reasonably charge for the work and make a little extra side cash. I have done some tailoring and repairs for myself, so I know how to do them. I am used to pricing for the creation of an entire custom garment or outfit though, which this really isn't. I was thinking of asking for $8 for hemming a pair of pants, and $10 for a dress or skirt. Does this sound like a reasonable amount? ------ Call me Han. I'll try anything once :)

Date: 6/23/12 5:46 PM You might call a few dry cleaners in your area to see what they charge and go from there. When I was in law school I enjoyed having a few small sewing projects to do. You know, something I already KNEW I was good at.

At least you'll know if you're grossly undercharging. Skirt/dress hems can be tricky if they're pleated or made from any variety of fabric. Perhaps say $x for a simple dress/skirt hem, for example.

I only charge then what they can afford. They are living on barrowed money. Some have a small job. I charge 7-8 for pants. 10. for a skirt hem. these are simple jobs and you can get them done fast. Alway let them know that this is collage student charges. You can have two sets of charges. one for your normal customers and collage student charges.
