I'm not quite sure if this is a good place to ask this, but here it goes.
I'm a beginner sewer who has been sewing things for everyone but myself, and next I want to make something for my mother. She isn't the biggest fan of her body, hasn't been since she had four kids, and I wanna make her something way pretty.
Only problem is she wants a dress with a circle skirt. Something wide and flowing. Now, I don't know much about dressing for figures other than stick-straight and hourglass, but I am of the thinking that that is something to be avoided for apple-shaped ladies. But I don't want to tell my mom to pick something more 'figure-flattering', I want to make her idea work for her.

So, what I want to ask is, does anyone have any ideas for a pattern that might work for me? As I said, I'm only a beginner, so I don't really want to alter anything a crazy amount. Honestly, any ideas at all would be awesome. Should I look for fabric with a big print on it? Or should I just stick with no print?
Thank you very much in advance to anyone who deigns to reply!

Peggy Sagers has a swing dress pattern that is supposed to be good for plus sizes and it includes bust sizing. It may be just what she wants. Be sure to read all the reviews, if there are any, first.

This pattern suggests a slinky knit. The heavier acetate/lycra slinky is quite flattering in a darkish color. I personally would avoid the large prints and thin knits that show every skin wrinkle.

In a woven style, I would suggest a fabric that drapes rather than anything stiff. Vertical lines are flattering: v-necks, shoulder princess styles, lines that angle more vertically than horizontally.

I also vote for a dress with drape. The shaping like on the Peggy Sagers dress, that comes in under the bust and then flares out, is really flattering for those of us with deflated baby pouches. And a print like a paisley or something else swirly moves the eye around and helps with the camouflage.

Check out the patterns with bust sizing. Makes fitting easier. All the big 4 pattern companies have some.
