Why I sew my own clothes When it is so much cheaper and faster to get Ready to Wear

Date: 6/26/12 6:13 AM Yesterday I was wearing a new dress that I had made, and a very good friend exclaimed: - You have the perfect body for that dress! This comment really had me thinking. I absolutely do not have a perfect body for anything. Quite the opposite: I am short, quite curvy, and I inherited my grandmothers backside. What we seamstress have is the privilege of doing things the right way: we do not fit your body to clothes, we fit clothes to our bodies! And it looks so much better! When I buy ready to wear clothes I usually look shorter and fuller than when I wear something I made to really fit. It is so wonderful to be able to pick THAT pattern, THAT color and know what to enhance, where and how! With ready to wear clothes... well... I will be lucky if I don't come out of the store looking like a ladybug... Do you have the same about making your own clothes?

The clothes I made just fit me better and are more becoming, usually. PLUS I hate shopping for clothes in stores but I love shopping in fabric stores. Finally, making my own clothes is usually quicker than finding what I need in a store. I remember, before I started sewing, looking for three days just to find a little knit top to match a dressy suit I bought. Now I can make one in a couple of hours, and it will fit perfectly and be a good color to go with the suit.

How cute, that made me smile! I started sewing because I wanted clothes, that fit, and was too cheap to have everything tailored.

She's 86 years old and no longer has what anyone would consider a good figure. Yet most people would say she looks lovely, and a major reason is because her custom made dress skims her figure almost flawlessly without any drag lines or pulls. Whenever I sew a tailored jacket for myself, I aim for that kind of fit. I would never find a RTW jacket in a store to fit that well, not even with alterations. The only way I can get anything close to a custom fit is by designing my clothes to flatter my figure and sewing them myself. ------ The essence of life is statistical improbability on a colossal scale. Date: 6/29/12 9:27 PM I showed someone (size 22 petite) how quickly she could make a basic pair of pull on pants using a Burda pattern. Her first reaction (even before the fitting adjustments that had to be made) was "Wow - these pants make my butt look good!" And you know what? They did! We quickly raised the waist, took the legs in ever so slightly and whipped up a pair of pants for her that fit. You'd never get that in RTW and it was so much fun watching her walk out with new confidence. She always wears pull on pants with loose blouses over the top. She just didn't know she could have custom fit pull ons with so little time and effort. joanico - I hope to get to your level but for now - even those simple pants made a big difference! ------ Mary http://checkmatesystem.com
