BBC Olympic comedy premiering! Downton Abbey Fans

Date: 6/27/12 7:28 AM Something to tape: BBC short comedy series "Twenty Twelve" starts THIS Thursday, featuring DA's Hugh Bonneville as the hapless manager coordinating London Olympic business. Filmed in the actual offices where Olympic organizers work, his incompetent staff does things like setting the Olympic clock to count up instead of down for the Games and routes incoming flights over UK nuclear reactors. "Anyone who has been in a school fundraiser or church committee will recognize the disasters involved." Sounds like fun!

Like The Office and other more recent comedies, it was a laugh-track-less mockumentary, and "spot on" about working in government and large bureaucracies. But that doesn't mean I won't watch this one....Hugh Bonneville is magnificent at comedy! I just finished listening to his BBC Radio sitcom "Married." Relatives even got H. (who can't understand the Queen's English) hooked on watching a whole detective season on DVD. They have more who-done-it mystery and humor than violence. And they don't throw away their seasoned older actors like US shows. Our major networks keep failing us, copying each other with more violent cop shows, foul comedies, and reality crap. So we have to pay more for Cable quality (we need cable just to get stations like A&E, BBC, and Discovery.) Where are the writers of shows like Seinfeld and Home Improvement? You've expressed my sentiments exactly. Some of the upcoming series that are on the premium channels (HBO, Showtime, etc.) look interesting, but then there's the language to deal with - they just go overboard and it's not worth my money to watch. I set my DVR to record the 2012 series since it's on around midnight here. I've been a fan of many of PBS' series for years. It all started with John Steed and Mrs. Peel . . . .

We ditched the dish in favor of Netflix and an improved antennae - oh happy days! Just finished Foyle's War, another British offering which we pulled from NetFlix. We did get the TiVo unit which works with the antennae. So nice to still be able to record shows without having dish or cable. (Two channels simultaneously on our unit.). And Netflix is much smoother and easier to manage on the TiVo unit than it was on the Roku. The format of the British shows has been just right. And a little bit longer show with no interruption feels like a whole evening's entertainment without having to alot time for an entire movie. Rosemary and Thyme is not on the same par as the other shows but certainly worthy of being an afternoon sewing companion. Another Netflix note.....our friends went on their first big driving vacation and were planning on meandering through some civil war battlegrounds. We loaned them our iPad for the trip. Besides pulling up some free Civil War reads for the Kindle app, loaded some Civil War documentaries in the Netflix instant queu for them to access. ------ I have no idea what Apple thought I was saying so be a Peach and credit anything bizarre to auto correct.

We are not real techies (ask our kids for fixes) but H. just got rid of land line, changed to Dish because Comcast all-inclusive bills were getting huge. (He pays most bills on a desktop, plus he likes to pretend like he's into the latest thing.) We, who do not have old Brains wired for this stuff, wonder where it will all be in 10 years. Meanwhile, our 20-month old GD can already play games and color on her mom's phone--I feel soooo old. We are keeping Netflix now with just Instant--love the Brit and Independent offerings, but I am finding that their "new" offerings are coming out later and later. I assume there is a "Release Date" contract for them. I am recording all the movie channels while we get them free--sometimes they don't notice the expiration dates. Note--HBO also has on a new "Network" show with Jeff Daniels that is supposed to be dead-on with current politics.
