Gymnastics Leotard Pattern Backside Coverage

I am going to attempt (one day) to sew my daughter a gymnastics leotard. I have seen a lot of talk about the Jalie patterns, but it doesn't look like the butt converge is that great. Does anyone have experience with the Jalie 3138 patterns or similar? Or suggestions of other patterns with some good butt coverage? Thanks so much!

I have found that it fits my gymnast wonderfully. If you are just looking at the pattern flat, remember that when you sew it up and add elastic, the pattern back will become nicely curved and provide coverage. I have read in many times that "people say" to apply the elastic in almost a 1:1 ratio in the front, and more gathered in the back, which results in better coverage and less riding up. If your gymnast wears those little shorts it's kind of a moot point anyway, but my gymnast does find that leotards with less gathering in the front are more comfortable. -- Edited on 6/28/12 1:41 AM -- ------ Kenmore 158.14101 Juki MO-735 Juki TL2010Q

I actually think the butt coverage is pretty good on this one. However, it doesn't matter. My daughter is at the age or gym level where ALL the girls wear shorts over their leotards. Look around at your daughter's gym and see what the trend is there. At other gyms in the area it looks like the optionals are not permitted to wear shorts, though. I've used the Jalie tights pattern but had to change it a lot - so much that now she's grown out of those shorts I don't want to try it again. I recently tried 2796. The hotpants got a resounding "no" from my daughter. "Why did you make me big panties???" I then tried the compression shorts but had to make them much shorter in both the hip to waist area and the leg length. That one is officially closer to what my daughter said she wants but I have noticed she doesn't wear it. The booty shorts are such a small item and you'd think it would be easy to create them from another sort of similiar pattern but I'm not finding it so. I asked Emilie to put a gym short pattern in the Jalie line. I really hope they do. I'll spend the $15 in a heartbeat to quit having to mess with making up my own pattern. You know, maybe I'll just buy a used commercial short that fits her and cut it apart.
