I'm a self taught, wing it, hope for the best, kinda sewing person. However, I've recently dedicated myself to understanding terminology and construction. I have several (too-many-to-count) strapless dresses that I want to add straps to, mostly because strapless bra's are so uncomfortable. Is there a specific construction technique to adding straps to strapless dresses? Please advise.

My approach would depend on the fabric, style, and construction of the dress.

I bet if you post a couple pics of specific dresses there would be many creative suggestions!

Check the tutorials/free patterns on shirred dresses.
Depending on if they are casual or whatever, you can
find ideas for gathered, spaghetti, shirred, braided straps,
or ties going around the neck. If you have a little longer hem,
you could take some off to make matching straps.

Now you can also buy clear and color bra straps to interchange-advantage is they are adjustable.
If you look at RTW dresses or bras with removable straps, they often show little tabs on the front and back, which you can make from ribbon or bias, the 4 hooks go thru it. This way you don't have to make separate straps for each dress.

My sis graduated college in May and asked for me to add straps to her strapless dress. She lives in PA, I'm in KS, so I made up a couple of different styles and took them home with me. I safety pinned them on in the different ways you could wear them and then simply hand sewed the ones she liked in the dress. It was about as easy as it could be.
