Pomeranian dog hair Dry, very heavy coat and some mats on the back end

She has an appointment with the groomer on Monday. On Google, some people shave in a situation like this, some cut really close to the skin. She is a black pomeranian. This is our first pomeranian. She was a family owned dog from her puppyhood and was 1 week in the shelter on a family release. She's almost 1 month older than our dog we lost. I have brushed her several times today and got lots of undercoat out, and she is looking much better. I'd like her to look like a pomeranian, but a little less thicker and heavy coated.
mamafitz Beginner WI USA Member since 8/24/02 Posts: 1132	Login to reply to this post In reply to Padmé << Like this post Date: 6/29/12 10:07 PM congratulations! i have 2 poms. i have never shaved them down, so can't tell you from personal experience, but i've read that if you do shave them down, there is a possibility the hair will grow back different. one of my poms has a thicker coat than the other, and i'm not sure if that's just how they are, or if it's because one is a girl and one is a boy, or if it's because my girl is only one year old (she's the one with the thinner coat). i guess i'm saying i'm not sure if you can do anything about her coat if it's too heavy for your liking. i never thought i'd like a little pocket dog (mine weigh 5 and 6 pounds each), but i am totally in love them. they are so affectionate. wanna see them? my puppehs i took this on the day between their birthdays (one is april 25, and the other is april 27). esperanza is 1, randall is 5. randall is missing most of his teeth on one side of his mouth, so that's why his tongue sticks out. he was a rescue. -- Edited on 6/29/12 10:09 PM -- ------ Linda Girls do not dress for boys. Looks very cute & keeps down on matting. MagPie was also a rescue some time ago, she will be 12 y.o. next month in July. ------ I am a gal from Kalamazoo.... oh what a gal... smile.... Dh and I seemed to connect with her when we walked into the shelter. She was in a low pen and she thought she was ours. We went back and looked at the other dogs and then asked about her. So, we went into the new visiting courtyard and she checked out the area, did her business on the astro turf, and then came back to us as if she had been ours forever. We took her home, she check out the backyard and made it hers, then checked out every room in the house. She really loves my children. She spends a lot of time with them in their room or the living room. She is overweight. They had some vet paper history, and last year she was 12 pounds. I weighed her today, and she is 20.6! I've got her on Mature Iams, and we've been distracting her, but I think she's getting a little nibbly hungry, so I'm going to cook some carrots for her tomorrow for snacking. Her teeth are straight, nice and clean. Her ears are perky, and her tail lies flat on her back. She wags it alot at us. I think when she did her backyard and house check, she pretty much knew we would do. I thought about bathing her and maybe using a cream rinse? I will ask the groomer. We looked at special shedding brushes, but decided to wait on those.

Macy will be 10 in September. Spot would have been 10 in August. They have the same look across their eyes. She reacts to us in the same way as Spot. I hope in time she will treat us like he did. We were his parents, then as he aged he seemed to grow to be more loving and watchful of us. We really thought no other dog would do, but him.
kathi s Beginner CA USA Member since 1/23/03 Posts: 1658	Login to reply to this post Like this post Date: 6/29/12 11:43 PM I have never had a pom, but have had keehonds and a schipperke- all dogs with a fine undercoat and a more coarse outer coat. My experience has been don't bathe your dog until you work the mats out- it will just make them worse. Pons are small so you should be able to break up the mats with a grooming comb. If they are really bad , cut into them vertically to open them up. I was advised to never shave a dog with a double coat as it may not grow back correctly- I don't know: I never tried. I was told to only use dog formulated shampoos and rinses, but I used to use baby shampoo on my dogs as it didn't irritate the eyes and they smelled great for a day or two. They never had any Bad effects. Good luck and I'm happy your pom got such a great home!
mamafitz Beginner WI USA Member since 8/24/02 Posts: 1132	Login to reply to this post In reply to Padmé << Like this post Date: 6/30/12 0:01 AM i have a conditioner i use on my poms when i bathe them (it's for dogs, i can't remember the brand. a shampoo and a conditioner). honestly, i don't bathe them very often, it takes forever for their coats to dry. personally, i have better results with their fur when i comb them instead of using a brush. i use a cat comb. i usually have to do randall in stages. his undercoat is pretty thick, and he doesn't really like it, so he won't sit there for the whole deal at once. i wouldn't bathe her until you figure out the matted hair. for tiny ones i snip them out, but big ones, i think i'd just gradually try and comb them out over the course of a week or so. ask the groomer. ------ Linda Girls do not dress for boys. However, that's probably not what you're looking for.

He still looks like a pom, but more comfortable in the heat and with less fur issues. Of course, this is also the same dog that rubs his belly in the snow, over ice and sits in the rain too. I think his coat gets in the way.

I use Bio-Groom shampoo & conditioner on our dogs; it is what our groomer uses. I've never bought anything from the big box chain pet stores, as I prefer to use what the groomer recommends. I use a good metal dog comb to work out mats. I start from the outer most edge of the mat and try to comb thru & de-tangle. If a mat is too gnarly, I carefully cut it out. Normally I will cut thru the mid-point of the mat and try to comb out from there. If that doesn't work, I cut off more and work my way down to the skin. Some people like the Furminator, but my groomer tells me it does cut the hair. I bought one for our spaniel and I really think it does cut the hair. I don't like it, and don't use it. If the dog's hair and skin are dry, it may need a good omega supplement. I wonder why the dog has gone from 12 lbs to 20 lbs in one year. Something is not right. Perhaps the owner is in bad health and that's why the dog was ultimately surrendered. Definitely put the dog on a diet and if it looks hungry, green beans and canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) are good low-cal fillers so the dog feels fed. Reduce amounts over time. The dog will need exercise, too.
