This is a first for me. I'm moving from Michigan to Montana this month. I've never had anyone move me before. I have done some packing but need to finish it up. I did not hire packers so that's all me.

I know that moving cross country is different than moving locally. Does anyone have any suggestions or helpful things from experiences they have had?

It's going to take about 2 weeks for my stuff to arrive and I hear it will likely be loaded, then unloaded into a warehouse, then reloaded for the trip. I don't have a ton of valuable or breakable things anymore. We had a huge auction and got rid of a ton of stuff.

eta: I won't have a ton of room in my own vehicle to take stuff on my drive there. I am taking my dogs.

Do I remember moving! From California to Pennsylvania with a dog and a cat. A really big adventure.

The biggest thing I can suggest is you have a Last In First Out (LIFO) box. In this box are cleaning supplies, a set of sheets or a sleeping bag, a couple of bathroom towels, a bar of soap, a change of clothes, pet food, some cookware and dishes and a can opener (a wine bottle opener too if you're so inclined) These items are in this box so they are the first ones to land in your new place, so you won't have to be overwhelmed looking for things when you first move in; and especially if you have to wait a few weeks before the rest arrives. You could also put this box in your car, if there's room.

When I moved, it took three weeks for my furniture to arrive via moving van. I slept on the floor, in a sleeping bag in a huge three bedroom house. It was an adventure!

Great advice! I did forget to mention that I am moving into my boyfriends home that is already furnished. But the FIFO idea is great regardless!

I think my sewing machines will be top on that list!!!

We got transferred a lot, with toddlers too.
Are you loading a Pod that is closed in a warehouse til you move?
If so, put in LAST a box with cutters, TP, hand soap, cleaning supplies, paper plates, rags, essentials for moving day. Otherwise, put that in your car, along with a cooler for snacks at rest stops.

LABEL your boxes with 1's, 2's, 3's or red/white/blue markers so you know what to open first and what can wait til the next week, like decor. Set them together by numbers when unloading. Also label Garage, Kitchen, Bath. I like to get my kitchen set up first, then you want beds!
If you are in a hotel til moving day, make a list of things you use every day that aren't available so you don't have to buy. Take the dogs on trial car rides now if they aren't used to it--vets can also give them a lite tranquilizer for a move if they are nervous.

It will be quite a change of scenery/culture--good luck!

Thanks! I was trying to think of a way to categorize my stuff like that. Some kind of color coding like you suggest would be very helpful.

No pods unfortunately! None of those type of moving things go to Montana...seriously! I won't have any control over how it it ultimately loaded because it's going to a warehouse and being unloaded before it's loaded again on a truck headed west.


Luckily, my dogs have been travelers since they were tiny puppies. I play sports with them and they travel a lot! It's still going to be a LONG drive! I am planning on breaking it up into three days. I found hotels fairly equidistant that take dogs and will be making reservations.

Re updates on BF--well now, not much of a problem.
Just pack breakables well in bubble wrap for all that warehouse handling. I have heard stories on storage theft, so label boxes just by rooms (not electronics or such) and tape them up well. And have a List of 7 #1 boxes, 12 #2 etc. so you can CHECK full inventory when they arrive.
So now he is getting out of the work, he can cook or take you out moving day and better buy you some cowboy boots soon!
La Quintas are dog-friendly.
If you have just an apt. now, have you considered a price alternative of having a friend or bonded service drive a U-haul out there behind you instead of storage costs?
