Title says it all...

I was filling my cart, and I realized that shipping on my $135 order was estimated at $38. I'm fine with the honestly stated $4 handling charge, even though it totally turns me off as a consumer, but wondering where the crazy shipping charge comes from.

Does this get fixed when the order goes through? I love her taste, and I'm not cheap, but $38 shipping may just be my tipping point.

Bummer.

You can email or call them to check on it. I know the estimates are pretty high.

I have had two shipments, each with a pretty full box. I don't think I paid half that from their place to Texas.

One box included 3 'regular' size pieces and a six yard length of beautiful 45" cotton from their weekly special page. Lots of fabric.

I called my order in to them so don't have experience with their online estimator.

Bwahaha. I AM cheap, and $5 shipping almost made me not order something last month.

I'd call and see what's up with it, or if it changes. A store DH likes for his guns has shipping for free if you call, but like $20 for the internet. Don't know why, however.

I was once going to order from Marcy Tilton, but balked when I saw the shipping estimate and ran away!

Check out their "Purchase Order" procedures. You can fill your cart online, then call them and get the actual shipping charges before placing the order. This is what I've done for my orders.

I don't know why they continue with software that estimates the shipping so inaccurate and high - it's a huge turn-off. Their fabrics are really very nice and unique, though.

I agree with blue mooney it's crazy that they're still using those too high estimates!

Every order I've had from her has included a refund of shipping charges - she does honor the actual charge + $5 handling. Yes, I think that's high, and it's part of the reason I don't order more from her....but I do order, because she does have awesome stuff!

Ok, I guess I'll bite the bullet and try her out. While the shipping seems awful, at least Marcy Tilton's sales are 25-50% off fabrics and end cuts...unlike a certain very popular site that offers very odd remnants at only 10-15% off the already high retail price. Boo.

It seems that every store has one flaw...Elliot Berman is having a big sale this week--not the super %50 off, but 25 off plus free shipping on $150 (effectively). But only full yards!! My knits patterns all take 1.5yds, the savings disappears if I have to waste a half a yard

Dear SecondHand Rogue and all on this thread,
A friend told me about this conversation, so let me pipe in here. My website has a boilerplate that automatically computes shipping, and it can be wrong because it computes it by each item rather than by actual weight or destination. I've tried to override this to reflect the actual costs it but does not work that way, so instead we work around it. Here is how. If you order via Paypal and the shipping is not right, we issue a refund via Paypal which shows up on your credit card . If you have underpaid, we issue a Paypal request for additional postage, but this happens most often with international customers. If you pay via a Purchase Order, you call in with your credit card #, and we can adjust the shipping when we issue the charge. If you request we can keep your cc# on file for future purchases. The site works so well in so many ways, and this is one glitch in the works...and if you are a new customer the shipping costs can seem off kilter. Shelley and Beth who do the shipping are scrupulous in getting the costs right for our customers. We do add a flat $4 handling charge to each order. We ship via the US Postal Service which keeps costs down too....as a rural customer, they pick up our shipments each day and provide shipping materials, so we use the flat rate boxes whenever possible. We are a small business, very service oriented and have a direct relationship with our customers...we want them to be satisfied and we pay attention to this kind of feedback. One aspect you may not be aware of is that we accept returns on fabric on a case by case basis. Buying on the internet does have advantages, but you can't touch the fabric, so if you get something and don't like it, you can return it. We also offer personalized service with customers on the phone helping with matching colors, putting top and bottom fabrics together, planning for a trip etc. And we offer swatching too. We all love what we do and are always looking for ways to do it better....and at the end of the day we head into our studios to sew because we love that too.

I've only ordered from her twice, but have gotten refunds on shipping overages.

As a sewing supply merchant, I must say that it is very hard to keep shipping costs low. I am now using USPS regional rate boxes, and have been able to lower my shipping rates substantially. However, that said...there are some shipping costs which seem high, but there is nothing that can be done about it. I ship First Class mail whenever I can (but there is a weight limit b4 it becomes Priority...that's not my choice).

For instance, I can ship one (38" long) yard of interfacing for $3.99 first class mail...that is what it costs. But I can ship 3 to 4 yards+ some notions in the flat-rate Envelope (that we reinforce with extra cardboard and tape so that it doesn't rip) for $5.99 (including delivery confirmation and insurance)

Most commercial sites have a "Shipping and Store Policy" page, that explains their shipping costs and other things. If a site doesn't have a page like that, I always email the store and ask why they don't...because surprises that affect my budget really tweak me off!
