Pattern calls for 1/8 piping, but does not specify lip size. Am I missing something? I bought half inch but am now finding it should of been 3/4 inch.

I understand that it should fit in a standard 5/8" seam allowance.

It really depends on how closely you can get your foot and needle to the piping cord itself. Do you have a nice, narrow zipper foot and adjustable needle position that will allow you to get in nice and snugly next to the cord? Then you'll be fine.

Once in class I used a gadget to make piping (Piping Hot piping maker or something, maybe?) that involved using a rotary cutter to trim the seam allowances to a precise--and narrow!--1/4" or 1/2". It made the piping very tidy, which I'm not sure is totally necessary, but did prove to me that having a large lip isn't necessary.
