3 members like this. Date: 7/10/12 1:27 AM So I cut and basted a shoulder-princess-seam dress. Fitting, I increased the vertical seam allowances in the bodice from 5/8, to 7/8, to 1-1/8, at which point the dress was juuuuust a little snug around the waist and popping a little at the bust. I remembered that a garment is a fraction bigger with properly pressed seams than with unpressed seams, so I decided that the 1-1/8 allowances, blending back to 7/8 inch at the bust, would end up being just right.
I just finished sewing and pressing and topstitching, and, OK, "a fraction" is an understatement. I could now take another four or so inches out of the waist and three out of the bust. Admittedly, this is six seams, and therefore twelve edges that went from slightly rolled to fitted nice and flat, so I shouldn't be surprised. But I am anyway.
That is all. I just wanted to post my startlement.
(Edited to add: But the dress will be fine, if a bit looser and more casual than I imagined. My main reason for sticking to shoulder princess seams is that I find them much less demanding, in terms of precision, than armhole princess seams.) -- Edited on 7/10/12 1:37 AM -- ------ ChickenFreak

Date: 7/13/12 2:04 PM Eek. I do this a lot. Sometimes I only finger-press the seams... Rarely do I do the whole steam-press on a muslin.
but I'll learn from you - thank you for posting!! |

HotPatterns has an Indispensable Dress with armhole princess seams, and a Plain & Simple Princess Shirt with shoulder princess seams. I prefer the shoulder seams, so I put the Princess Shirt on top of the skirt from the Indispensable dress. ------ ChickenFreak
