I need to make some 2ft x 12ft panels that will remain out in the wind sun & rain all summer long. The panels are basically for privacy and shade.

The panels can be a semi open weave, like garden chair material.

Can anyone suggest a material to use and a place to order it from?

Thanks

Unless you're specifically looking for an open-weave fabric, I'd check out Sunbrella

Seems that it would work well if you don't want to replace it often.

Various places sell sun shade tarps. Like this tarp place and one at Amazon. I don't know anything about the tarp site or the products in general. The only thing I know about sun shade tarps is how well one my friend got for her house works against the hot afternoon sun on her front porch.

Google Pfifertex, it's a vinyl mesh sunscreen, they sell it lots of places including Joanns online.

Our Joann carries (in the store) a really nice selection of outdoor canvas in a variety of colors and prints (including some lovely awning stripes), which has been treated to resist sunfading. IIRC, it's about $8/yard or so.

The information provided here is very useful, thank you all for your help, now I have a good start point to begin my research from.

After some more Internet searching I also found a product / company called Coolaroo.

Rochford Supply in Mn has shade cloth, similar to what they use in greenhouses. It is 96" wide and runs $7.88 a yd up to 50 yds, then it's $6.88 yard. I've been happy with everything I've ordered from here, RochforSupply.com

I have have 5 Coolaroo shades. I bought them at my local hardware store (OSH - Orchard Supply Hardware). They came with mounting bracket at the top, there's a rod in the bottom of the shade that weights it down. There are two cords on each end of the shade. Pull the cords and the bottom rod is rolled up with the shade. There's a locking mechanism in the mounting hardware similar to the locking mechanism on blinds -- pull it to the right, and it locks the cords. Pull it to the left, and the cords are unlocked and you can let the shade down.

The shades are mounted over the window on the outside of the house, similar to the photo on this page (with the red flower pot to the right of the window). Coolaroo shade.

The fabric does a good job of blocking a great deal of light, it has a somewhat open weave, so you can see a sort of "blurred" view of the outdoors from inside the house. It's not completely solid and does allow for air flow.

I've been really pleased with them. I think this is the third year that we have used them, and they are holding up well.

The wall of the house that faces the afternoon sun is more glass than wall: 2 10-foot picture windows, an 8-foot sliding glass door and another window. All are covered with the shades during the day, and it makes a difference in the coolness of the interior of the house. All the windows are now double-paned, which helps a lot, but the Coolaroo shades have improved the situation even further.

Major home improvement store, such as Home Depot or Lowes, usually carries the mesh fabric for purchase as well. You can give them a call to be sure before you take the drive as well.

Happy hunting!
