Oh lucky you.. decorating the sewing room is sooo much fun as its your space.. not a public space such as your living room.. and for most of us.. not a space we have to share with family.
I am full of ideas.. hope you can use some of them.. It might help if I knew what sort of decor look you were going for.. such as cottage.. or kitchy/modern.. but most of my suggestions would work anyhow..
Cover old suitcases, boxes, etc with a fabric.. lots of quilters cotton sewing themed fabrics out there nowadays.. You can also paint or stencil wood boxes that you can find at thrift stores or even buy cheaply. .with coupon of course.. at some hobby and fabric stores.. These are great for storing all sorts of gear..
Have any old buttons you aren't using. These can be glued to almost anything. .memo boards for instance. and a good way to repurpose buttons you don't plan on using for whatever reason on a garment.
Grab a piece of smooth sided plywood.. not too thick.. and a jigsaw and cut out. or have your DH cut out large drawings of scissors, or round shapes you can paint as buttons,, etc.. OF course if you aren't doing a sewing themed room.. you might want to cut out other shapes in the forms of whatever your theme is.. After you sand the edges,, just paint or stain.. Now if you wish you can put hooks on these cut outs to hang your scissors or what have you from them.. Make those as large as you want .. These can fill lup wall space quickly.
A shadow box.. sold at craft stores.. can be filled with old scissors, thimbles, etc.. or anything in relation to the theme you are using.. Use paper .. there are sooo many nice papers out nowadsays in the paper craft sections of the hobby stores.. to back your shadow box with.. Choose a paper in your theme.. then arrange the memorabilia you have chosen in front of the paper.
I love my three foot shelves with the shaker pegs under them I purchased from Michaels.. used them above my window... You can sit whatever you have on them.. and hang things from the pegs..
Grab any piece of furniture you can use from the thrift store .. be it small or large.. and handpaint or stencil on it. You can get more custom than that. If you already have your cabinetry etc in the room.. then maybe just a small side table, a wood chair or such can be handpainted ..
And don't forget the floor.. you can also handpaint or stencil a floorcloth.. those are loads of fun.
And look back in the archives at CJ Tinkles sewing machine covers.. hers just put mine to shame.. but are so inspiring.. Try your hand at making new ones for your machines.. |

Date: 7/11/12 8:48 AM I love to start with a picture/piece of fabric/rug etc. that I love and find a wall color that makes that piece pop.
That builds the base for the room and I make sure everything else works with those colors.
I love the shelf/shaker peg idea and also love the idea of using fabric and patterns that you already own as art work.
I hung a child's dress that I had smocked in the sewing room in our first home. That room sold the house when we put it on the market. ------ Mary

I too put up some ads of sm from when they first came out... also some post cards in frames I got at the thrift shop, only one I had a frame shop do for me as it was a more expensive picture & I kinda made it a more focal point near the door. I hope to get some old knitting needles from thrift shop & put a set up on the wall by my yarn supply .... it is really anything that makes you happy would look very nice.
