Date: 7/11/12 4:03 PM Now the cucumbers are growing like crazy! I'll have to pick every single night! I just wish my tomatoes would ripen. I can never seem to get to harvest them with my cucumbers!
I have picked several banana peppers and jalapeno peppers. I need rain!
How is your garden doing and what are you harvesting now? |

Date: 7/11/12 4:30 PM If I can call one tomato plant a garden then my garden is doing great. Lots of little green tomatoes. Of course I water the thing almost every day.
My various flower beds are also doing well. We can use some rain also. I have had to water my flower beds a couple of times as the heat had some of the plants dropping a bit.

Date: 7/11/12 5:36 PM My lone tomatoe plant is doing fine. It has sevearl tomatoes on it, but it is barely 16 inches high. I am not sure why it is not taller than it is. I have fertilized it and I do water it. The spot where I planted it has a little bit of slope for drainage and I put a ridge around the lower part so the water stays in the roots and does not drain away. The tomaotes are still green as of today. No pink or red on them. They get sun from sunrise until 4pm, then they are in the shade after that. I might buy another tomatoe plant, as Sweet 100 for the tiny tomatoes. My Oregon Spring is going to produce nice sized tomatoes, even on such a short plant. ------ Quilting is relaxing to me. Date: 7/12/12 3:26 AM This is the first time in a long time that we have had more of a "real" garden. Usually it has been volunteer cherry tomatoes.
I've been picking some summer squash, zucchini & crookneck.
The cucumbers are still tiny. My volunteer cherry tomato plant in the front yard has some ripe cherry tomatoes, the back yard not yet. I planted a dozen Anaheim peppers and now have some decent sized peppers, but not full grown yet. I planted a few of a hotter variety & it has some tiny peppers. I also planted 2 miniature watermelon plants, one plant seems to be doing well (gets more sun) with one melon that continues to grow and others that are tiny. It will be a while before I really have anything other than summer squash.
P.S. Around here everything has to be watered as there is never any rain in the summer. -- Edited on 7/12/12 3:28 AM -- ------ Martha |

Date: 7/12/12 10:53 AM Our zucchini plant is producing like crazy--we've gotten a 12 inch zucchini every other day for the last 2 weeks. And I'm not even crazy about it (my daughter planted it and we've been eating them different ways). Cucumbers are getting pretty big--they're about 5 inches long but aren't finished yet, our cherry tomatoes are delicious, and we've had quite a few string beans! My daughter even planted corn which is growing well but I'm not holding out much hope for an actual edible ear of corn--we'll see. I water the garden every day or every other day.
The thing is, this is all in a raised garden, 8 ft. x 4 ft., and it's amazing how much stuff fit in there! |

Date: 7/12/12 11:59 AM A few tomatoes, some okra. All plants look healthy, but they don't produce a lot. Kale is growing strong despite the heat. Cukes are developing.
Can anybody recommend a DIY sprinkler system? I bought a DIY drip system at Home Depot yesterday, which I haven't set up yet, but I'd rather work with sprinkler heads. I had soaker hoses before, but they weren't very effective, so I removed them.

Date: 7/12/12 1:16 PM Well I just found out my small tomato plant is one that is compact and does not grow that high. No wonder this thing has not put on an inch of heigh in 6 weeks. It is basically the same size I planted. It is flowering and has many tomatoes on it, so this is good. It will not grow tall is all. I thought all tomato plants grew tall. ------ Quilting is relaxing to me. I love to play with fabrics, patterns and colors.

Subject: Hows your garden doing? Date: 7/13/12 9:30 AM I have discovered something. I read online that some bugs hate chili powder & to put that around plants. So this weekend I picked up a bag of chili flakes & Monday sprinkled it around... I just came back inside & I am happy to report it works! The ants & whatever those little red bugs are have taken a hike! So I thought I would pass it along. ------ I am a gal from Kalamazoo.... oh what a gal... smile....
