Date: 7/12/12 6:09 PM Am using Swedish Tracing Paper and wonder if anyone knows of an alternative to this. Have tried white craft paper, but find it's too difficult to see through and to storage. Is there a tissue paper that would be good for this? |

Date: 7/12/12 6:18 PM I trace my patterns off on the backside of wrapping paper marked with 1" gridlines. I lay the tissue pattern ON TOP OF the wrapping paper, and use a basic Sharpie to trace. The Sharpie bleeds through the tissue and leaves a nice clear mark on the wrapping paper (but doesn't bleed through). Quick, simple, and cheap. (The only downside is that the wrapping paper rolls back up on itself, so you have to press it after you cut the patter pieces out. And, no, I won't tell you how long I'd been doing this before I realized I could do that! Ha!)
If I am unusually impatient and want to skip the step of doing a muslin, I will trace onto Tru-Grid, which is like interfacing marked with 1" gridlines, and has the added bonus of being sewable. But it's a lot more difficult to mark on (I've gotten the best results using a Chaco-liner). You can buy it by the bolt or yard from JoAnn.

Date: 7/12/12 8:02 PM I use pattern tracing paper from Nancy's Notions. It is 21 inches wide and 77 yards long for around $7. You can see through it -- I use a white poster board underneath -- if you place it on top of a cutting board, it is too confusing. I use a quart-size ziplok bag to hold the pieces after they are traced and slip it behind the pattern envelope. ------ Total fabric on hand: 1/1/13 1683.731 yds

2 members like this. Date: 7/12/12 8:09 PM I love STP, and was recently surprised to find its identical twin at Joann's of all places. So, if you have one near, check it out. It's probably with the interfacings. ------ --

Date: 7/12/12 8:16 PM Doctor's exam paper is a great tracing paper.
I bought a roll from a local quilt shop a year ago and am still working with it.
I just clued in that now that I work for a doctor I can just order extra the next time I order supplies and get it wholesale. ------ Proud parent of a Dwight International School Honour Roll Student |

Date: 7/12/12 8:57 PM Painter's plastic drop cloth on a roll from the hardware store. It's easy to find, can be written on, conform somewhat to body, and cheap. ------ my blog: http://kf-biblioblog.blogspot.com/

Date: 7/12/12 11:37 PM I tried STP once when I found some at my thrift store and really didn't like it. Don't really remember why except the red dots bothered me somehow. I get free thick plastic, so that is what I use. ------ http://bgballroom.wordpress.com to follow the progress on my next ballgown. |

Date: 7/13/12 0:18 AM I've used soil separator fabric that I purchase at Home Depot or Lowe's or ???. It's trench wrap fabric for drainage and it is really strong. You could actually sew this together - it's pretty strong. Because it's see through when tracing patterns you need to use colored pencils or ??? It works for me and you get lots for a very reasonable price - 36 inches wide and 150 feet for 14.99 ------ What is Maxine saying??

Date: 7/13/12 5:54 AM Here's another thought...I went to my physician's office and asked them if I could buy a roll of their exam paper used to cover the exam tables. It cost me $5.00 and has yards and yards on the roll. It is thin enough to see through and yet heavy enough to last through multiple uses. And because it was so cheap,I don't hesitate to use it freely. |
