Date: 7/13/12 2:53 PM Hi all!
Had a general question regarding 4-way stretch jersey-knit fabric, or any other kind of stretchy fabric:
When cutting out the final fabric to sew, how would one go about estimating the stretch of the fabric so that it will fit without being too loose or tight? Is there a standard calculation or method to adjust from the pattern to the final? |

Date: 7/13/12 5:49 PM There really isn't any calculation that you can do. You really have to evaluate every piece of knit that comes your way. Patterns for knits usually have a gauge that has you fold over a section of fabric and if it's suitable for the pattern, it should stretch to where the arrow shows you. If it stretches more, you'll have to possibly take in the side seams, and if it stretches less, don't use that knit for that pattern, or you could simply cut the pattern bigger to accommodate the lack of stretch in that particular knit.
If all else fails, you can wrap a length of the fabric around you and see how it behaves on your body. Peggy Sagers talks about this in her webcasts for I think her yoga pants and possibly some of the knit tops webcasts too. ------ emadethis.wordpress.com
