Hi, helpful folks.
I'm working on McCalls 5619. I measured from *their * marked apex on the bodice piece to *my * natural waist, where the skirt will be attached and it looked like I needed an additional inch and five quarters. So I traced the piece with the length added.
You can see a pic of what I've done
here. But after sewing on the arm straps, I can tell the bodice still won't fall long enough below my bust. The skirt seam line will be on my bust, not below it, which is the whole reason I grabbed this pattern. Cute RTW dresses like this do the same thing!
So, what now, folks? My brand new FFRP doesn't address this shape bodice (disappointing). Do I just keep tacking on more length?

It's so hot! I need a summer dress!

Thanks,
Leu sews in NYC

Yes, more length, and according to the photo, more width, too. Add the difference in height between green and yellow, and the difference in width between yellow and green. As a result, you'll probably need a dart to bring the arm-hole back to normal size. Welcome to the FBA club!

FYI, I'm pretty sure that this bodice is *supposed* to just hang out right below the "apex". It's not fitted, according to the pattern. This is why they call it a baby-doll dress because it's made in a child's pattern, with no waist indentations.

the pattern looks to have the seam above the natural waist, but below the bust, so if you're longer in the body (shoulder to waist) then you'll need more length in the straps or in the bodice, or both. If the bodice fitted before you added the straps, could you make longer straps?

"you'll probably need a dart to bring the arm-hole back to normal size".
But you can rotate the dart into the gathers above and below the bust.

I made this dress for a friend recently, and I ended up lengthening both the bodice piece and the shoulder piece. I just measured her from shoulder to below the bust, and then noted where she wanted the elastic top of the bodice to hit, and lengthened the pieces accordingly. Then adjusted the back to match the total increased length and redrew the armhole according to the original pattern. Overall it worked out very well! It's a cute dress!

I'm working on a pattern that has the waistline marked a mere 4" below the bustline! Is that insane? The standard is 7-9".

So on my trace-out, I marked the (ridiculous) 4" waistline AND a 7" waistline. I'll post the pattern # when I get home.

But REALLY!
