Date: 7/16/12 1:40 PM Can you steer me to your favorite tute on making a reversible vest? I'm going to needs pics or photos because I just can't figger it out with just words.
And the youtube videos have a LOT of hand sewing. I'd like minimal hand sewing -- mostly machine sewing, where I'm finally just closing up q 4" "turning gap", y'know?
Some leave the shoulders open. Some leave the sides open. Either way, I can't visualize that last step. Yet it must be similar to bagging a jacket (which I just did!), right?
Ow! Aspirin!

Date: 7/16/12 2:43 PM In Power Sewing Step by Step there is a method of turning a lined vest through both side seams -- which allows you to adjust the fit at the side seams before you do the final stitching.
On the Amazon "Look Inside" feature, search for
Gold Medal Lining
It's on pages 34 & 35. I've done this technique at least twice, but I had the book right there as I did it. I couldn't describe how I did it off the top of my head, but I remember that it turned out well.
This is not the only way to turn a lined vest, by any means.

Date: 7/17/12 0:34 AM My friend and costuming mentor Karen has a wonderful page on her site where she posts instructions for and compares three different ways of turning vests. She's demonstrating them for boned Renaissance bodices--but the examples she provides are for commercial vest patterns, and whenever I have to line and turn anything, that's where I look.
Karen's Sewing Korner vest tutorial
Also... I know I've seen (linked here at PR) a couple of tutorials on turning lined dress bodices through the strap with NO HAND SEWING. And, thanks to Google, I've tracked one of them down for you:
All-Machine Clean-Finish Sleeveless Lined Bodice Tutorial
I know it's a sleeveless dress, not a vest, but all the pieces and steps are the same, and you can extrapolate easily.
HTH! Sometimes things don't make sense until you actually sit down to try them, and then they sort of magically *work.*

Date: 7/17/12 12:08 PM Holy crow, I cannot thank you both enough for all this great (visual!) information. Right, Sister Stir: I have to sit down with the bits and I think I will see it even more clearly. But I do think these tutes will do it for me!
