I'm debating on purchasing an elastic gathering foot for my 744. I've searched the web and find they are quite pricey and my manual doesn't indicate there is such a foot. I found a one on line, but it didn't state *elastic*. Is there actually a difference? I don't actually think there is but . . . . I want to use it to attach elastic to knits.

Hi, yes there is a difference. There is a big bulky foot that allows you to gather and serge that piece to another that stays flat. Sometimes I just use it to gather one strip of fabric without attaching it to anything else. A serger foot that has a bar on it where you can pull elastic through it and adjust the width of the elastic while you are serging elastic to a piece of fabric.

Thanks for your response. What I've seen on line so far had the bar on it, so that looks like what I'm searching for.

Hi again. When you order the foot, make sure you get the foot that will fit your elna serger, not just that it is a certain foot. There must be somewhere on the order that says you can use that foot on your particular elna serger.

Definitely - I found some presser feet on eBay, but when I checked the specs, the 744 wasn't listed, so I'll definitely pay attention. Thanks again.

The Pfaff serger feet that fit their 4800 series are the same feet for your Elna. The 744 and Pfaff 4800 series were made in the same factory in Japan. These feet do not fit all Elna models though.

I have the Pfaff campaign kit of 3 feet for my Elna 744.. It includes the Gathering/Shirring foot., the Blindhem foot and the Band and Braiding foot. The kit even comes with a little book on settings for different techniques.
I don't know if you can find the kit now but maybe on Ebay you might but I think the feet can still be purchased separately if you call a Pfaff dealer. SVP has taken over Pfaff so they might not be able to supply the feet for the older models.
I also don't know if these feet are still offered through Elna since Janome took them over in the USA but Elna used to offer the feet for the 744 and the 945. I haven't checked the Elna site to see if they are still offered.
If you cannot find your foot through either Pfaff or Elna, maybe contact Tacony because even though Elna no longer uses Tacony as their distributor, Tacony was the distributor for Elna before Janome took over Elna.
You will find that these feet have multiple uses. My favorite of all is the blindhem foot for accurate stitching in a line, not just for hems but also for attaching lace and tape etc.. The band and braiding foot is also good for ribbon and belt loops.
I have not checked for an elastic foot but as for the shirring foot, I prefer to gather without it by just adjusting the differential feed on my serger but to gather a fabric and attach it to a non gathered fabric at the same time is really what I think it is best used for.

Hi, I have the Elna 925 serger. I called my dealer who used to sell Elna sewing machines and sergers until not very long ago and I asked him if he could get me the blind hem foot. He said he couldn't get anymore feet for my serger or for the Pfaff that was made at the same time. I finally found a place online, but after he said that he could get it for me, he had to cancel my order because he could no longer get anymore. My serger is 15 years old. It was made prior to the 945 serger.

I have an Elna foot brochure for sewing machines and sergers. For Elna sergers the book only shows feet for the Elna models 683,686,744 and 945. The elastic foot they show in the book states to fit only the models 683 and 686.

Betakin and Harriet - thanks to you both for the very helpful information. I didn't find anything on eBay but I'll continue to look. I came across an *ask Elna* site, but after you pose the question, you have to pay $30 for the answer.

Betakin, the blindhem foot you mentioned might be what I could use. I didn't realize that a serger could have a variety of presser feet like a sewing machine does. I don't have an Elna dealer where we live now, although there is a Pfaff dealer that I use for my sewing machine. Maybe he could help me out. I guess I've just not spent enough time learning about my machine!
