Small appliance question What about an electric skillet?

I remember Mom & Grandma used to cook some wonderful things in them without heating up the house. Since we are once again heading into the 100 + temperatures this week (and it is not even August! ), I have been thinking today of what my Mom & Grandma's did who did even have or heard of AC & the electric skillet came to mind. Plus I remember how very good things tasted too. ..... So anyone have one ? What might you recommend? .... I need a regular 2 prong one as our outlets are not 3 prong friendly & have to be a bit careful with wattage's if that matters for this. Thanks so very much as always! Now I have a Presto with a deep lid so it won't spit around your counter. Get the teflon kind and rectangular size, not square. Great for pancakes, burgers, eggs, casseroles, grilled cheese-when you don't want to heat up the stove/kitchen and quick clean-up. I'm not sure if all appliances have to be 3-prong now ? but there probably are converters for older homes. I just did a quick look online ... there is a 16" Presto with glass lid nonstick... it says you can put them in water now too! WOW...!!! Mom never ever put it in water all the way. Is this the type you meant? It was on Amazon.com .... Thanks so much! Just double checked it is $39.99 on Amazon.com. Good price? I sometimes run mine on the terrace or balcony from an electric cable extension lead. No cooking smells in the house. It was a must while in the service.. as often we would be stuck somewhere without cooking facilities.. Along with a crock pot and a toaster oven. you can cook most anything and stay a bit cooler than what you would be if using full size appliances.. IF you don't have a crock pot.. get one.. And if you don't have an electric skillet.. then buy one.. Even if you don't use it in the winters.. its nice for summer and I think you will find yourself using both these appliances year round. My MIL uses a toaster oven now for most everything she bakes..

I don't like only-does-one-thing appliances tho, like sandwich-makers, hot-dog grillers. Any love the George Foreman grills? H. increasingly doesn't want to go out and work his grill for just 2 mouths.... BTW, he just replaced the leaking door seal on the DW for a $20 kit when the repairman wanted $150. You can find most instructions like this online. I didn't even notice the rubber bits flaking off, as it looked just like pasta pieces! -- Edited on 7/22/12 8:20 AM --

That gets used in my house a lot too..

Used it most when we renovated the kitchen and I had to cook in the den for almost a month. That one has long since gone. This past winter I picked up a Delonghi from Bed, Bath & Beyond. The reason: We have a generator and when the electricity goes off, it will run everything...but the stove. Even with every other applicance/heater/AC cut off, just heating up one burner on the stove strains the generator. So, I can have a shower, blow my hair dry, fix coffee, stay cool/warm, even do laundry, but couldn't cook a one pot meal on the stove That's when I got the new electric skillet. I haven't used it yet. Gramma, I gave up on toasters many years ago. I use a toaster oven. I have a Black and Decker now. I got it on a super deal and bought one for here(to replace my old one)and one for the river cottage(to replace an old one). The toaster ovens of today seem easier to clean. I have a very small crock pot I picked up at Wal-mart a few years ago for about $5.00. I only use it to make warm apple cider at Christmas. I've never understood how to use a crock pot. Never like the idea of cooking something at a low heat for 12 hours, that I can cook in the oven(or on top of the stove) in less than 2 hours.

All I can say. being speechless at this bit of news.. is if you had l00 degree temos all summerlong your crock pot would be your best friend.. Other than that.. the food that comes out of it is just plain delicious.. tender, makes it own broth and naturally tenderizes meats.... and you can start it in the morning. and just walk away and come back to it at dinnertime.. so convenient .. so you can go to the fabric store and cook your dinner all at the same time..

A friend got it for me last year & I do like it very much. It is a Cook's Essential one . The inside is removable & I can clean it really easy. DH gave both my Crockpots away! The thing with electric skillet is I remember my Dad, who loved to cook, also cooking up a big batch of scrambled eggs with bacon cut up in it in the electric skillet. Also roasts (which I can fix in my roaster oven too), .... oh oh oh & homemade donuts yes Mom made the best homemade donuts in the electric skillet. ...lots of things. Grandma C used to fix a whole Sunday dinner in her electric skillets (she had more than one). Yes I do need to get one ... the more think about it the more I want it! ------ I am a gal from Kalamazoo.... oh what a gal... smile....
