I have never been to one but it does sure sound interesting... lots of yarns, felting techniques Is anyone going? Or been to this type of event? It is on for 2 days I would only have DH take me to one of the days. ....
Thank you for the info!

Do you mean the Midwest Felting Symposium? If so, MFS is mostly wet felting (ie fiber, not yarn) and needle felting, probably not so much with the knitting-fulling or machine felting. The vendors are probably mostly going to be selling fibers and felting tools.

I am not going to MFS, but I am familiar with similar events. In September, I am going to a week-long wet felting workshop in Michigan.

There are way more knitting events than felting events, so I am sure one will be near you. I think Susan's Fiber Shop is in WI, they are sponsoring the MFS and probably have some other knitting classes and such throughout the year....

There are a couple of annual or semi-annual felting workshops.

Felters Fling is held every other year (next will be in 2013). It is mostly advanced level multi-day classes. I have never been, although I might consider going next year.

The Midwest Felting Symposium is also every other year (opposite years of Felters Fling). It has a medley of classes at different skill levels.

I am going to Creative Felt Gathering, a newer yearly workshop. It has five 1-day workshops at the intermediate (I think) level. I have not been before.

If you want to take beginner level classes, you can often find them at yarn stores and fiber festivals - usually these are 1/2 day to 2 day classes. There aren't a lot of advanced level classes available, so the workshops seem to function as a place for experienced folks to get together since it isn't a super-popular hobby.

There are garment making classes (and books) out there, but it is at the higher skill level especially if you want to make a shaped/fitted garment without seams. The intermediate level garment classes are usually for something like a boxy vest or jacket where you make a big sheet of felt and cut it up and sew it - not really something that anyone with garment sewing skills really would benefit from. I haven't really tried seamless garment making because you need a big workspace and it takes a long time. If I do go to Felter's Fling in the future, it would be to take an advanced garment class, as these tend to be week-long sessions.
