Cutting mat on drop leaf table? How to make it work.

I would like to attach a cutting mat to the top and still be able to drop the leaves so I can store the table when no being used. Has anyone done this? Can the cutting mats be cut so the table can fold? What did you use to keep the edges smooth? How did you attache the mat to the table? Thanks for any advice! I simply lay the cutting mat on top when using it. If I need to fold the table down I store the mat on a bottom shelf in the middle, semi-folded into a U shape. I should keep it flat. I've stored large mats like this behind a couch against a wall or under a bed. You could drill a couple of holes and hang it on the backside of door.

There are times when the mat gets in the way. I don't like it when I trace patterns, I think it's easier to see on the plain white table, so I wouldn't want my mats attached. ------ My grandmother taught me to sew when I was 10, and I've been sewing ever since.

I have an upright piano and it fits perfectly behind it for storage. Another mat that is large but not as big I store between the mattress and box spring as it needed a place to be stored. I use it sometimes on my chest freezer top. It probably would be handy if the mats were attached to the drop leafs permanently but I was nervous about cutting and trying to attach the big mat to the table so looked for a hiding place instead.

My cutting table spends most of it's time folded up, and my sewing space is so small it would be great to be able to collapse the table and then set it up quickly without having to deal with the cutting mat. I'd really like to attach the cutting mat to save me a setup and break down step. It would also me nice to not have it shifting around. Lol! If you figure out a way to cut and glue the mat I am all ears but the piano is next to the little niche where the table lives. I used to have the antique quilt on a rack but realized the table could serve the same purpose which was to display my mother's quilt. The cutting mat stays in shape behind the piano so I felt really lucky to find such a good hiding place. I thought the underbed was a good idea for storage in case the piano should go.

Date: 8/7/12 8:42 AM I'd like to suggest you not permanently affix the mat to the table. That would mean you would have to cut it in three pieces, which isn't a good idea if you plan to use the whole mat. Why? Because when your cutter goes over the junction of where the leaf is up, the fabric won't be cut. I once bought a folding cutting mat and every time I tried to cut over the fold, even when the mat was full, the fabric wouldn't be cut. What I can suggest is that you get a smaller mat and/or buy a larger one and store them both.
