I just got the new Ikea catalog, and I noticed they are now emphasizing their offerings of fabric by the yard. They even are selling a sewing machine (for $69). They use the fabric throughout the catalog for crafty things like covering a dresser with it (!?). Prices range from $5 to $10 per yard.

This sewing thing must really be catching on. Maybe the department stores will start selling fabric and patterns again one of these days.

They've had fabric for a while, but perhaps are just now starting to emphasize it. Personally, I love their designs, very bold prints, great colors.

They have been selling it for at least 15 years, maybe longer.

I think they've always sold fabric, but I thought it was interesting that they are featuring it in this way. They even said you could make clothing with it.

I think they are responding to the craft lists and blogs where people make garments out of Ikea fabric. I have made a couple of garments out of Ikea fabric. I think about Ikea fabric as Marimekko for those of us on limited budgets.

Living near to an IKEA I have always seen fabric for sale there and many people in my sewing class use it.

Has anyone here used their fabric? How is the quality?

personally, I love it, and the quality is excellent. As Sarah said, the designs are similar to Marrimekko. A lot of it is not garment weight, more home dec weight. I made a purse from some of it that gets many complements Vogue 8274

I do too! I love some of it.

The fabric quality is not bad. It tends to be more on the home dec kind of thing.

I first bought fabric at Ikea in 1986. They have had it for a long time.

It has always been in the Canadian Catalogues too, but I do not think they sold it online.
