Making Leotards with Spandex

I am making leotards for my daughter who does gymnastics so I am working strictly with spandex material. I got a serger recently and am in the process of trying to figure that out, its going decently considering I am VERY new to sewing. I am going to be purchasing a coverstitch machine soon to be able to complete my project. I don't want them to look too "home made". My budget is low so my options are pretty limited.

I am deciding between the Janome Coverpro 900CPX and the Brother 2340CV, leaning toward the Janome. Any opinions/experience about sewing with stretch material on these machines? I have read a lot of reviews but can't find anything specific to spandex/stretch. I don't need anything fancy, just something simple that does its job well.

Thanks so much in advance for any knowledge anyone can provide!!!

I would suggest that you use a twin needle in the sewing machine to mimic the coverstitch. I did so for years before I ever got around to buying one and I make lots of stretch. Lots. There is a 4.5 mm needle that gives a great look. Use the exact same threads as what you put the elastic on with and you can't tell.

I also used twin needle for years, but now I have a coverpro 900 and do not know how I did without it........90% of what I do on it is spandex dance leos etc and I do about 300 a year.

300 a year! Wow. I would say that is good dependability for me to go by. Thanks!
