Date: 8/1/12 10:03 PM Today DH looked at the checking account and sees a pending charge for over $800 on the debit card!! Of course neither of us used the card for such an amount, and upon calling find out that it's for some auto loan place that either a car dealer would use, or individuals on the internet. I found that out by googling the name of the payee.
So the bank cancelled his card, and tomorrow they'll start the investigation, after the charge goes through. We've gone online to the FTC and have downloaded their very helpful 60 page guide. We have it mapped out what he has to do tomorrow to get this ball rolling, in case it is ID theft.
A couple of months ago I told him something I'd read here, about how Life Lock is useless, and that you can handle it on your own with the credit bureaus. But he didn't do anything. I took care of mine, but did he do anything? NO!
I told him I can help him, but no one is going to talk to me about this. He has to handle it himself. It just makes me angry that I told him several times we needed to take steps for identity protection and he just ignored me. He also likes me to make all the calls on business matters, and gets so frustrated when I can't handle these things for him.
Sorry, I just need to vent! ------ Bernina 730E, 530, and 350PE

I'm super vigilant with my cards. I'm an accountant. My debit card # was stolen/snatched/whatever twice in the last 2 years. I've spoken to numerous people as to how this type of thing can happen, and you would be surprised how easy it is. There are only a handful of places that handle all the card transactions, and hackers can gain access even if only for a split second, and can grab data. Both times this happened to me my bank returned my money within a few days. Now DH and I have separate cards for separate checking accounts, and I have a low limit card I use just for online/around town use.
As for your DH...yeah, that's a man thing. It will never change. lol
Good luck to you. |

Date: 8/2/12 0:53 AM Well what he finds strange, is that he went to the bank just yesterday, and spoke to a customer rep about something else. They got to talking and they guy was asking him a lot of questions about his account, like giving him advice, including ID theft advice, trying to get him to get a credit card through them - more protection.
Someone could have switched their auto payment to come out of our account, but if someone bought a car in his name, and has the payments setup to come off our debit card, then you would think they'd have had the number for at least a month. Why haven't they charged other stuff? We will find out soon though - he'll be getting his credit report and that will show us if anyone's applied for loans in his name. ------ Bernina 730E, 530, and 350PE

Date: 8/2/12 1:46 PM If it's just the debit card number, you probably don't have to worry about ID theft. The bank will replace the card and the outdated card number the thieves have will be worth nothing. Just keep on top of your statement to make sure no more charges come through.
I use my debit card only to get cash from an ATM. Everything else is the credit card, because thieves can't drain your bank account through your credit card. With a debit card, the money can be missing from your account for up to 10 days while the bank investigates. My credit card is replaced an average of twice a year, due to the prevalence of account number theft. It is annoying, but costs me no money and no anxiety. ------ http://theslapdashsewist.blogspot.com

Date: 8/2/12 4:11 PM I've actually had my identity stolen back in 2005. If they're charging your current card, then it's likely they just got a hold of the card's number not his identity.
Usually if your identity is stolen, they start using your SSN. Either to work, open up credit cards, take out loans.. etc.
I was fortunate in that it only took me a few months to straighten out. The only thing I have to deal with now is that the gal who used my SSN to open credit cards used her name (or a fake name - don't know). So that name still shows up on my credit report no matter how many times I write them to tell them that is not me. Fortunately that doesn't hurt my credit score - but still frustrating every time I see it.
If this was a debit card, he should probably change his pin number as well. The thief probably doesn't have it, but better safe than sorry.
The one thing I heard now, is that people are starting to steal kids identity. And the poor kids don't know until they either try to open credit themselves or get turned down for assistance when they apply for college. I have a 2 year old.. so now I've got to start moitoring his credit.
