Date: 8/3/12 11:10 PM Two weeks ago I took our 2 year cat into the ER clinic.
Her symptoms were a decrease in eating, some vomiting and just not being her happy self.
She had a blood workup and x-rays. The only thing the vet found was her white blood cell count was on the low side.
She was a little dehydrated so they gave her some fluid under the skin and antibiotics.
Yesterday she started throwing up and today she was lethargic and had some tummy breathing. We took her back to the clinic. They did another blood workup and x-rays. This time her white blood cell count was at the very end of the chart.
She is spending the next couple days at the clinic on an IV for very mild dehydrations and more antibiotics. ($799)
The ER vet wants to do a bone marrow biospy ($500). Of course he can not say for sure that she has cancer but from what he did say it sure sounds like he thinks it is.
I have a call into our family vet as I want to talk to him about the bone marrow biospy and if there is really any hope for her?

Date: 8/3/12 11:27 PM I think that a low white count in cats is found with feline leukemia. I'd ask the vet, especially if the cat was never vaccinated for that disease.
I am very sorry that your cat is sick. |

Date: 8/4/12 4:35 PM Oh Ada I am so sorry about this. Has the vet given her an antinausea & pain injection yet? ... We had our Lily had similiar behavior & after receiving these & fluids for 2 weeks ... one visit one week & one visit the next she was okay for a while. She had GERD & asthma. .. I do not know if it would help your little guy but with lots of vomiting & pain our vet had said Lily's counts were down too. .............. It would not hurt to ask........... also be sure he checks her stomach .... a sensitive stomach is sign of GERD which is treatable & sensitive food will also help allot. ........
Best wishes for you & your special kitty cat...>^,,^< ------ I am a gal from Kalamazoo.... oh what a gal... smile.... It is in Michigan... la la la ...love that Glen Miller classic!

Date: 8/4/12 6:31 PM After spending about $700 on my dog for a condition common to older dogs, and watching her go through all of this, I can feel your pain. I had a cat who had a low white cell count, and it was borderline feline leukemia. How was this found out? Through a blood test and not bone marrow. The bone marrow biopsy is very painful, even on humans, and I wouldn't subject any animal to this.
I'd reconsider the biopsy and ask the vet to do a full blood panel. That should give you some answers and spare you the pain of Kitty's pain. ------ "We don't impose our rhythm on Nature. The key is to respect and live within Her." Jean-Charles Boisset, Winemaker

Date: 8/5/12 1:35 AM She's probably already had a full blood panel, which is why they want to do the bone marrow biopsy. And she will be knocked out for a bone marrow biopsy. Unlike humans, cats won't lie still for something like that. ;)
But definitely discuss it with your vet. She/he would have the cat's full records in front of her/him and know what has been considered and/or ruled out now. Then you can determine together what the best next step is. ------ khurtdvm

Date: 8/5/12 10:34 AM She is going to come home today. I talked to our family vet whose speciality is cats and we are going to meet with him this coming week and come up with a treatment plan based on what we can afford.
They did another complete blood workup and x-rays on this trip and have been checking her blood each day. Yesterday the count was over 5000, had been 2000. So progress has been made. Except for the extream low white blood cell count everything else is OK. The bigger problem right now is she is not eating. Not a good sign.
Her sister, Coco has now taken up the meowing that Pebbles usually does. I am getting more attention from Coco than ever before? Yes their names are Coco & Pebbles. Its not my fault. My husband named the black kitten Coco so, of course, my grandson said the other kitten had to be named Pebbles.

Date: 8/5/12 1:27 PM She won't even eat tuna a tiny bit of tuna? or plain yogurt? .... oh dear. ..... what a boiled egg? When Abigail the Babykins was sicko last year & not eating the vet said give her a tiny bit of boiled egg for protein & she did eat a little bit ... of course she will eat string cheese most any time........ she would not eat yogurt either but it is protein & does not usually bother cats. .......
I hope she does better at home, maybe she is stressed out from being away from home too? ...........
Best wishes........ keep us posted what the regular vet says.... ------ I am a gal from Kalamazoo.... oh what a gal... smile.... It is in Michigan... la la la ...love that Glen Miller classic!

2 members like this. Date: 8/9/12 12:12 PM Pebbles has been home for 4 days. She was not eating much at all and still not acting like her old self. She is on antibiotics twice a day.
Today she upchucked a huge hairball that had about 1/4 yard of ombry (sp) ribbon woven around the hairball. Uck.
I was doing some ribbon embroidry a couple weeks ago so that has to be when she ate it.
Not sure if this is what caused the problem? Can having 1/4 yard of ribbon in your stomach make the white blood count go down?
I really hope that is what caused this problem and not the death sentence we were given last week.
And she is eating like crazy. Hope it stays down. -- Edited on 8/9/12 12:14 PM -- ------ Ada

POOOH galore in litter box & this very very long piece of scotch tape with a few scotch tape little balls too............. She did indeed recover after that!
Horray for Pebbles! Good Job getting rid of that thread! ------ I am a gal from Kalamazoo.... oh what a gal... smile.... It is in Michigan... la la la ...love that Glen Miller classic!
