My husband bought two rather expensive suits and the place altered them - they let the waist out as far as it would go but then he gained a tad of weight and now says they are too tight - only worn a few times. There is no seam allowance left and of course it has the typical complicated construction that men's suit pants have. Since he generally only wears the pants with the jacket I'm thinking a v-shaped gusset at each side seam would be able to let the waist out somehow since they fit fine everywhere else. Has anyone done this and if so is there an easy way? Additionally I have no idea where to try to get lightweight wool fabric for the gussets - one suit is black but the other is a slightly paler black with pinstripes. As I said though - he would just wear them when he would be keeping the jacket on anyway so no one would really see.

A few years ago someone on PR did that, but that was for women's pants which is a different story. I suggest going to a tailor or store which does alterations and ask if they have any leftover fabric you could use. Take the pants with you to help match better.

What I got from a store where hubby bought his clothes is the leftover pantlegs when they cut off to shorten them. They saved them in a bin in case they needed the fabric to match for a repair or alteration, but had so many that they were happy to give some to me.

There would be more to this than just adding some fabric. The waist band is not a simple addition to men's suit pants.

I see to alternatives. (1) take the pants to a professional tailor, or (2) diet.
