Date: 8/13/12 1:56 PM Can you use old wool blankets as batting? My FIL could do with something to throw on the bed when he's cold, and I was wondering if a blanket, quilted between two sheets would be a good idea? Would it be worth felting the blanket first? I would want the quilt to be washable (because I'm odd like that ) ------ Reading from Europe |

They were filled with old army blankets that had been washed/felted a few times before using them. After covering them with fabric, we let our kids do the tying to prevent them from shifting. They were well used for years and they went with our girls when they set up housekeeping.
Have fun with the project - and I'm sure it will keep him toasty! ------ Sewing in Wild, Wonderful West Virginia

Date: 8/13/12 4:33 PM Yes you can. I used an old Hudson's Bay blanket in this quilt that I finished earlier this year. I would wash the blanket first, according to its laundering instructions. As I noted with this pic, it makes for a VERY heavy quilt.

Thanks for the advice Jennifer and Ann. I don't know if I will go ahead with this, I have loads of projects that I would like to do, and not much time! It's great to know that its possible anyway! ------ Reading from Europe |
