Subject: JANOME Horizon 7700 & ELNA Excellence 740 ~~Love Fest~~ Date: 8/15/12 0:23 AM

I got into analysis paralysis over looking at these two machines... and while most of the real workings are probably the same, there are some differences.

I just love this ad with the weenie dog:

They both are affordable "stretch limo's" when it comes to having 11" of wide open spaces of harp/throat space. If you're not in the middle of doing some FMQ, that arm is a great place to put a cup of coffee or your pincushion.

Janome builds Elnas. Janome "owns" the Elna brand, AFAIK.

One HUGE point for Janome: The Horizon has a really cool automatic gizmo that converts the needleplate to a single/straight stitch hole with the touch of a button. The Elna requires a screwdriver.

The Elna has an uber-cool "garage" in the front for footsies. I *love* that feature.. but the Janome has a nicer accessory storage unit that slides over the free arm.

Both come with loads of feet and a very nice acrylic extension table for quilt work.

I just brought my Janome home tonight... so I'm off to go play... but I'll be back later to edit this post and include pics and more info.

Subject: Janine Horizon 7700 & Elna Excellence 740 Love Fest Date: 8/16/12 5:53 AM

Okay.... It's 3 AM & I'm finally getting away from my sewing table! It's been YEARS since I've had so much fun sewing that it could literally keep me up all night!

Seriously, I thought about making a cup of coffee and doing an all nighter!

So I am working on a tote bag - I'm laminating the exterior cotton panels & piping with HEAT n BOND Vinyl - pretty cool stuff!

There are something like 77 pieces to cut out for this thing!!!!!! Soooo after spending all night cutting ( & I'm still not done!) ... The only thing that I took to the sewing machine so far were the handles to the bag.

Each one has 4 layers of vinyl, 4 cotton, & 8 layers of Pellon SF101.

I have to say that I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Dual Feed on this machine! 16 layers - of which the vinyl was on the outside of both top & bottom... And not a single goofed up stitch nor any puckers whatsoever. So stinkin' cool!

PS ... Thanks to the mod who fixed my all caps subject line!!!

Everyone I know who has this machine just loves it. If I were in the market for a machine would probably get this one even though not a big fan of red. But I have a Jamone 10001 without a darn thing wrong with it great machine also so can' justify a new machine or afford it. Have lots of fun with it.

OMG... I know how you feel about the red!

2 months ago, if someone told me that there would be an alien in my house that didn't have the name "Elna" on it, I wouldn't have believed it.

It took ***alot*** for me to swallow leaving Elna behind (it's been such a good friend!).... and get over the brand, the red, the nothing's-made-like-it-used-to-be mentality I started with 2 months ago.

After comparing the two machines (and ignore the red!) ... this machine just ***feels*** like it's made better. Maybe the semi-sparkly red feels more Lincoln-like instead of the Ford blue on the Elna equivalent.

So now, given that I'm fully "over it"... I'm going to get my Elna 62 re-painted by an automotive body shop. And, heh heh, I'm really thinking of having the body done in a pearl white and have the top (that is light blue) done in a sparkly red to match the Horizon. They'd just look so good next to each other - and the old girl deserves to be freshened up.

Subject: Let's talk about Elna's "Exclusive" Stitches.... Date: 8/16/12 11:00 AM

So when I originally shopped for a new machine, my first stop was Elna (the brand is, errrr... "was" ... in my bloodstream after almost 40 years!) ....

I sat down at an Elna Excellence 740 and looked at the stitch chart that is under the hood. I was, of course, told that all of the stitches that are shown in blue (26 out of 245) were "exclusive" to Elna. The current Elna brochure also states this: "245 stitches including 26 exclusive Elna stitches" .

So at the time, I didn't know that Janome owns Elna - I may have thought that Janome just builds 'em to Elna's specifications. In reality, Janome owns Elna... so guess what? They own those stitches, too.

The new Horizon I just got has all of those same stitches - plus a couple more.

So what's with the "exclusive" statement? I don't quite see how they can put that on those brochures.

So if you're here doing your homework (like I did)... and you first sit down at that Elna and you can't imagine living without a few of those quilting stitches or an embroidery stitch that looks like a scissors, a needle & thread, or a spool of thread .. ... fear not, they're on the Horizon, too.

Janome owns Elna... so they own those stitches too, it would seem.

Discovering the "exclusive" just wasn't "exclusive" was just one of my slightly depressing moments as I discovered just another little thing about Elna in 2012 just isn't what it was in 1975.

So I finally got 77 pieces for this project cut... dang!

Here's the first show & tell:

Hard to tell from the pics... but this is cotton that I laminated with HeatnBond vinyl.

So the handle of this tote-in-progress was 16 layers thick... and then it was sewn onto the sides of the tote.. which have another 5 layers. So 21 layers so far and I haven't broke a needle or missed a stitch.

If this whole bag comes together and this machine doesn't balk at the thickness... well... darn... I think I'm gonna celebrate.

:)

Awesome! How does it go going from say 2 layers to 8 or 10? Do you have smaller stitches? I do on my Pfaff, but the Berninas do the transition fine. I'm very curious about the Janome. I know I can use tools to help, but I'm wondering about without things like a hump jumper.

Wow, I love the cute mousies, and your heat n bond laminating looks great! I'll have to look into trying that out myself!

If this is the official Janome Horizon love thread, I'd love to see pictures of the free arm storage. I don't know why I'm such a sucker for good storage. Love that Elna garage, love my Bernina Barbie case, and I love the organizer in the free arm on my Pfaff.

I've been tempted by the Horizon on more than one occasion - it's a great machine! Congratulations on settling on a machine and having some time to play and enjoy it!
