I am currently painting my new sewing room in our new place. I have TONS or thread and would like to get it out of the sewing table and display it where I can see it. I would also love to do this with my embroidery thread too. I have seen peg boards being used. I think it is a GREAT idea. My question is: Do you use metal or wood pegboard? What type of hangers work the best? I have seen baskets and I think those would hold my Hemmingworth spools great! So, any and all ideas are welcome.

The thing is though, with more my embroidery thread,and even a some of my garment sewing thread, I don't really keep it there. The only reason I don't do that, is I really have so much embroidery thread, in large commerical cones and small spools, it should last me (just sewing wise) for just years and years. Like at least 10 maybe
Thread sort of has a shelf life most times, and direct sunlight and dust can shorten that- and I'm trying to stretch it out as long as possible instead. Because of that, and because my peg board is near a window, and near a heating vent where dust can come down, I keep it in covered bins instead, and light and dust off it, just because I don't want it out where dust gets on it, I don't want it on the peg board which I do have someplace where open windows and light falls on it. Just because I do like real natural coming in from the windows light to sew by too. Lots of people though, put all their thread up on the walls and have it all out, and most times does not seem to be an issue for them, but at least find someplace that direct sunlight is not hitting it all the time, and not much dust maybe. I know Hemmingworth has those caps and that might help with dust somewhat, but I don't think those clear caps are actually UV resistant or anything like that. |

 2 members like this. I'm also thinking of putting up a peg board, but I haven't decided for sure yet.
I put up one of those magnetic knife racks from Ikea near my cutting table so all my scissors and rotary cutter are there. Then I got some of those wooden spool racks and I'm putting my serger cone threads up on that. I also have the Guttermann thread cabinet which I intend to hang on the wall separately. My other thread is in plastic thread cases on some shelves above my sewing tables. The only things I have left to hang are some rulers and my embroidery hoops, so I haven't decided if I should just hang those pieces individually or go for the peg board.

Date: 8/16/12 8:30 AM I used to hang my spools on a rack above my sewing desk, but decided against it mostly because the threads dangled and made the room look messy (small room). So I now toss all my thread into a basket on a shelf. Sorry I can't help much. ------

1 member likes this. Light and dust are the enemies of thread. Do yourself a favor and get those rolling plastic carts with like 6 drawers in them Thats what I have. They are just tall enough to hold the cone style emrboidery threads and hold your regular threads as well. ------

Date: 8/19/12 1:21 AM I also keep thread in plastic bins with snap lids out of light for the same reasons as above. I too have magnetic strip for scissors, but it drives me crazy how pins are always ending up attached to my magnetized implements! ------

The pegs never stayed in for me. I'd grab something and the peg would come out.

Date: 8/19/12 1:54 PM I have a peg board and really like. I bought a precut piece at Lowes or HD and it's white. Then you can buy a bag of generic hooks in all kinds of sizes and styles. Some work better than others. I think it's important to attach the board so there is a little space between the board and the wall. I didn't do that a first and the hooks would scratch the wall. I use it to hang my rulers and serger thread racks. (basement sewing room, no direct sun) ------

Date: 8/19/12 1:57 PM I hang my scissors & rotary cutters from my peg board. I have not had any problems with it even after 2 moves & being taken on & off walls it works nice for me. .... I get the key chain links for the big handle rotary cutter & hang it on the peg board with that. ------

Date: 8/21/12 10:50 AM Thank you everyone for your great ideas. I do have the plastic roll away carts with six drawers. So, I am going to commender one for all my thread. Luckily, my sewing room is north facing and gets very little direct sun light. We are currently fogged in at the moment, Oh Wait!!! We are always FOGGED in!!! LOL!!! Sun only comes out for 1 hour during the summer! This is why I HATE living in Extreme Northern California on the coast. Can any of you pass some sunlight my way?? LOL!!! I like the ideas with the other items listed. I can not thank you all enough. When I am finally finished setting up, I will shoot photos so all can see.
