help with alertations on a pattern pattern not in my size

Is it very hard to do? I've been sewing for some years now but never had to do this before if anyone has any tuts that I can follow would be great thanks ------ "My husband said if I buy any more (fabric) he would leave me - I'll miss him."

My only suggestion would be, trace off the smallest size and then make your adjustments. If you need to take in bigger side seams, trim down to what you need, if you need to narrow the shoulders, do so. Have you done a muslin or tissue fit with the size 8? What areas do you need to make smaller? Is it an all over fit problem? If your pattern is multi sized, look at the amount allowed between each size. Example: from a size 10 to a 12 might be a half inch difference. If you cut from the smallest size (8) take away a half inch all over and see what happens.

I'd like to help if I can. I took classes in pattern grading years ago and would enjoy dredging up some of my old knowledge. Let me know if you want my help and if so, let's start with one of the simplest patterns and see how it goes.

Date: 8/19/12 7:17 PM lvs2sew, There used to be a simple diagram in the Burda mags with showed how to grade the pattern based on the edges of the pattern but I can't find it on their website at the moment. I did find these two links which may help you: Burda - make a pattern larger or smaller This is a tutorial version of the picture I was trying to find. I've used this method a few times and have had pretty good results. grading a dress & sleeve bodice A bit more mathematical, but useful if you only have a one size pattern. Pattern grading is just a lot of repetition in proportion keeping the points in line.

I find the Burda link more appealing but it is a shame they didn't use a single pattern piece for the example. The overlapping pieces make it look more complicated than it is.

If you have uncut patterns (in any size), you can look at where they've added inches for larger sizes (i.e., on the side but not on the side front, etc). And you can see how on some curves the smaller sizes are ABOVE the larger ones (like armholes, necklines, etc). You can probably figure out enough to make a decent muslin and then tweak it from there.
