Sleeveless dress, little jacket, and trapped in the eighties

Date: 8/19/12 10:04 PM So, as I read the threads here it's increasingly clear that I'm trapped in the eighties. Pants that don't come up to the waist seem like a mistake. And my brain has an absolute rule that curved hems are intended to be tucked in. So I wanted to ask before I start sewing: Are sleeveless summer dresses with a little sleeved jacket over them also trapped in the eighties, or are they an option in this decade? I've been fighting with dress patterns, especially with the sleeves. I finally just want to sew a bleeping dress, so I want to try a sleeveless version, and then perhaps make a short-sleeved jacket with raglan sleeves that I can wear over more than one dress. Vintage Vogue 8812 Badgley Mischka 1154 Tom and Linda Platt 1237 ------ Marilyn January 2009 to January 2010 81 yards out and 71yards in January 2010 to the present 106.7 yards out and 146.5 yards in. January 2011 to the present: 47 yards out and 69 yards in.

It's a matter of noticing the current shape of dresses and the jackets that cover them. How fitted is everything? What is the current hem length? Is volume on top, bottom, or balanced this season? Are shoulders padded and augmented or closely fitted? Does the jacket hem fall at the hip, the waist or even higher? Are peplums and other details in or out? I could go on and on but you get the picture. Finally, if you like dresses and jackets and feel good in what you are wearing, who cares what decade you are living in? Live it up there!

Most people just want to wear clothes and look nice. I know this isn't exactly what you were looking to hear, but if you look good and you are happy with the sleeveless dress and jacket you make for yourself, then that's all I need to know. I think the shrugs and boleros have had it for now, so as long as the jacket isn't too short, I think the look is totally classic but could also be cute in a street fashioin kinda way if you push it in that direction like this: Just check the runway for the upcoming season to get an idea about fabrics: I'm still doing big florals, bold patterns, and jewel tone blocking. j. -- Edited on 8/21/12 1:40 PM --
