Hello,

I was given a serger by a co-worker, that was purchased by her mother a long time ago. It is a Singer Serger, model 14U286B made in Japan. Even though it is a old machine, it has never been used. When I opened the box the test material was still on it. Do I need to have it service before I use it?

I would definitely have it looked at. Old lubricants can become like glue over time, and gum up everything when you warm it up using it.

I picked up a White 734DS from a man whose wife passed away three years before. The machine sat upstairs in an attic room, with no heat or air conditioning, and hadn't been touched since the year before the wife passed. I took it home, cleaned the fuzz from the inside, flossed the tension and gave it a little oil. The machine is sitting on my sewing desk as I'm writing this, "exhausted" after a hard day of serging. It serges like a dream and is so quiet! I've yet to have it serviced.

So if I were you, try it out first, then think about whether or not it needs servicing.
