I will be taking a Fundamental Garment Construction class at university starting on Aug 31. One of the things I need to purchase is a woman's slack pattern with the following: Waistband, pockets and a zipper. I am fuller-figured and not a kid anymore (if you know what I mean). Something flattering. Can anyone give me suggestions on a nice pattern?

I had good luck with Simplicity 2700 Amazing Fit pants. Not everyone loved this pattern but you can lperuse at the 36 reviews here.

McCall's 5239 is a Palmer/Pletsch pattern so it has several fitting lines already on the pattern which makes it easier to fit. The instructions also include fitting tips.

I just made McCall's 6361, another Palmer/Pletsch pattern, which comes in several lengths . I made the shorts & really like this pattern.
Has a contoured waistband, side pockets and front zipper .

a contoured waistband feature is usually . flattering. Glad you're not dealing with an elastic waist which can add bulk or too much fabric around the middle and; who needs that?

Thank you ladies - now I've got a good starting point. I'll (try) to let you know how I make out. I'm still learning how to work/post within this site. Janice

I find a regular waist band, rather than a contour, is easier to work with when altering. But that's just me

My vote is for a Burda pattern just because of the amazing fit.

I'm sewing a pair right now from an older Burda Plus magazine but you can also buy them in the envelope at most fabric stores.

I think a contoured waistband might be somewhat difficult for a beginner sewer who has a fuller figure, especially if they have much of a tummy. I know I would not want to try it as my first pants pattern.
