Date: 8/22/12 10:06 AM I'm hard on stockings because my feet are wide and my shoes don't fit and the heels scrape and...
I guess we all know these tips: clear nail polish to stop a run. Also spraying a run with hair spray.
This morning, I PAINTED the heels of a new pair of nylons with clear nail polish. Took a while and I'm wondering if there are any other tips out there.
I could paint them with thinned Elmers glue but I don't believe that stuff is waterproof.

Date: 8/22/12 10:26 AM I would think fray check would work similarly to clear nail polish but haven't tried it myself. I always have a bottle of fray check in the sewing room.
During colder (California cold) weather I wear thicker stockings so they are less prone to running.
In high school I use to be in dance production, drill team and color guard. We use to always wear these thick "skin colored" tights. Those were not pretty but pretty durable. Maybe their look has improved because mine always looked like I had a bad orange tan. |

Date: 8/22/12 10:36 AM Stockings?! O.K....people are still wearing them, eh? Well, I buy knee-highs by the 6 pr. (the sheer support knee-his last a lot longer) and when there is a hole I toss that one. NEVER going back to the days of nail polish on my nylons....yipes. OR you can save the ruined ones and use as tomato and other plant ties for either gardening or deck gardening - to find a reuse is a good thing. ------ "Be kind whenever possible. Date: 8/22/12 10:40 AM You mean 'nylon stockings'? As in, pantyhose?
Haven't worn those in years.
I do wear Gold Toe brand socks and since I tend to put the toes out I will save them up and get out my darning egg have a marathon 'toe darning' evening. ------ Linda

Date: 8/22/12 11:01 AM Switch to net tights - provides some coverage, looks cute, and are more durable. ------ Cheap fabrics, like cheap shoes, are a false economy.

1 member likes this. Date: 8/22/12 12:37 PM Freeze new nylons before wearing them. Somehow supposed to strengthen & last longer. Worth a try?
Support or light support seem to be slightly better made & last longer than non-support cheaper pairs in my experience.
Always wash in a net bag in the machine if you don't want to hand wash. Assume no one would ever put their nylons in the dryer.... |

Date: 8/22/12 1:45 PM I have not worn stockings in many a year (HUZZAH!! I for one do not miss them one bit!), but back when we wore them with everything, I found there to be a HUGE difference in quality, durability, and fit between nicer brands like Victoria's Secret, and drugstore stockings like No Nonsense. They feel better, fit better, and last longer. ------ ~Gem in the prairie |

Date: 8/22/12 1:53 PM Someone on PR once mentioned a washing product that apparently works really well. I would love to try it. I still wear pantyhose for competition, although I have been told many people wear fishnets that apparently have padded feet so they don't cut into the soles of your feet, I haven't tried them yet. I am told they last much better than standard pantyhose and make your legs look better on the floor. Maybe it is my old eyes, but I have watched a lot of competitions and really can't see a difference.
The product was called something "hose", I think and was simple to use (no rinse, maybe?), made them last longer and maybe odor preventing? Seemed like a great idea at the time but I never followed up on it. ------ http://bgballroom.wordpress.com to follow the progress on my next ballgown. |
