Date: 8/22/12 4:43 PM I've been asked by a friend to make a lap size quilt for a new granddaughter for Christmas. She is leaving it up to me for design/fabric/colors but wants her name embroidered on it somewhere. She also wants quilt shop quality fabrics and yes she was told how much those cost. I have the perfect floral charm pack to use that was in my stash. She does not want baby designs but something the baby can grow into. I plan on doing an embroidery -- probably a Sunbonnet Sue -- with her name and making that the center of the quilt. I also plan to FMQ the quilt.
I have a figure of $100 in mind to include my time/quilting ($50) and $50 to cover the cost of fabric/thread/batting/stabilizer, etc. I have to mail order all my fabric so shipping costs will be included. I found a few places online that have some matching fabric on sale/clearance since it is an old Moda line and that will help keep the cost down for fabric.
My DH thinks this is way too much to charge her since she is our daughters future MIL come September. I know it is not but he wants to know what others charge so he can be more informed and understand what others charge.
So, what do you all think is a fair price? ------

Date: 8/22/12 7:27 PM If you look at prices for what you are being asked to make, I think you are pricing it way too low. I think your materials would be more than $50 unless everything, including the batting is on sale, and even then it is probably more. Quilting is not a cheap activity.
For a baby you have to use 100% cotton, so you won't save by using polyester batting.
You do beautiful work, and your time is worth something - doesn't it go, the laborer is worthy of his hire? Skilled labor should be AT LEAST $15 an hour, and it really should be $25 an hour, or more. If you figure that your time involved, including the shopping online will be 12 - 15 hours, that would be $180 - $225. Say, $200 for your labor, and $65 for materials, so it should be $265 or so.
Tell your husband that this is not an outrageous price AT ALL, but $100 is outrageously low. If craftspeople price their work too low it makes it hard on everyone else who is trying to make a living and it is not fair. The lady is asking for a handmade, individual work of art, made with quality materials by an experienced artist, and she should expect to pay a fair price for it. ------

Date: 8/22/12 7:31 PM $125 sounds about right. You might have to explain the cost of fabric, thread, embroidery thread, stabilizers, etc. Then you need to explain how many HOURS of you time it will take to do this quilt.
If she is acceptable, I think that is a fair price for a quilt. I could still be too low. $100 is way too low---even for your daughters future MIL. If she is the gracious woman we hope she is, then she will understand how much something made by you, and not factory made, is worth.
These things do not put themselves together, you know! How we wish...  ------
Quilting is relaxing to me. I love to play with fabrics, patterns and colors.

1 member likes this. I'm impressed that she's offering to pay. I usually get told by casual acquaintances that I will be sewing or knitting for them with no mention of buying materials let alone paying me for my time.
I just ignore them and let them dream on!

~Charm Pack $10.00
~Warm and White Crib Size $4.50 (on sale plus half the shipping cost since I ordered a king sized too. I'll add to the width if needed)
~1 yard Inner Border Fabric/Binding Fabric/shipping $8.50
~3 yards Outer Border Fabric/Backing Fabric/shipping (clearance price) $23.00
~I may possibly put wide rick rack around the embroidery or another solid color border and would order that with the inner border/binding fabric so it would not add that much to the total.
I have a large supply of embroidery thread, stablizers, etc. so I'm not counting that into the supply cost.
All the fabric is Moda.
Lynne is willing to pay whatever I want. She understands it is not cheap for the supplies. All this was explained to her when she looked at the three lap quilts I've made so far. It's DH that wants me to be fair, etc. I want to be fair as well but I also want paid for my time and quality of the finished quilt.

Once DH sees everyone's input on pricing, he'll agree on price. Then I have to let Lynne know the cost and let her decide if she still wants me to make the quilt.

Try to make your hubby understand this quilt will take a lot of time and you would like to do this for her, but you want to be paid a reasonable amount of money for this quality quilt. It will be a work of art and lovely to behold. ------
