It just occurred to me that this is it!

You wouldn't have to use much fabric while you perfect your seaming and hemming skills.

You could even sew a band to the bottom to learn how to do the neck finish.

That didn't go over so well!

But seriously does anyone know of a tutorial for making these? If not, I'm going to write one to help some friends on the Dave Ramsey boards who are just learning how to sew.

eta: apparently "belly band" is the word ... I googed and found a bunch.

Here's one: Belly Band tutorial

I have one that I wear with my jeans and I love it.

these were a life saver for me while pregnant and nursing. Pregant, they allowed me to not have my stomach hang out from under my pants at the end of my pregnancy when every top was too short. Nursing, they kept all my flabbing tummy in while lifting up my shirt to nurse. Not sure if I would wear one now though.

I saw this on an infomercial a few month ago and then, of course, noticed people wearing them on the street! It actually looked pretty good.

This is the sort of thing that makes me glad I sew my own clothes. When you have to buy supplemental clothing because standard clothing doesn't sufficiently cover your body, you know there's something wrong with clothing styles.
