Tested on expensive horse tack, so it must be good...

I am so liking my $10 Coach "stand-in" leather belt and I really want it to last, so I conditioned it this morning and I haven't even worn it yet.

I thought I'd share my cheap but time-tested (on hunt-seat horse tack...) home-made leather care products. Try them in an INCONSPICUOUS SPOT first, right?

Wash with castile soap. I buy a bar in the Dollar Store. Wet a sponge and RING THE LIFE OUT OF IT. Rub as much soap into it as you can. Apply to the finished side of the leather in a circular motion. Wipe off excess soap with a dry cloth or paper towel.

Put a drop of olive oil on a cloth or paper towel and apply the tiniest film of olive oil to the leather.

(I didn't use the olive oil on saddlery: just the castile soap to wash)

What do you think of Lexol cleaner and Lexol conditioner? I didn't know you rode! I do too.

Lexol is a standard for me. I use neatsfoot oil *sometimes*.

My riding background is checkered with attempts at various disciplines. I have jumped teeny jumps, and am competent if faced with something small on the trail. That's all for H/J stuff. I showed in dressage years ago, and then did endurance riding (I avoid using the term racing) in my 50s. My gelding is 22 this year and we are enjoying trail rides and a few minutes of arena work occasionally. I am riding a friend's horse for her as she awaits the arrival of her baby and I also ride one of cairncrew's horses (she is here on PR and blogs at Camp Runamuck).

no, well, only once and he made up the test as he barreled around the outdoor arena. I was happy that we didn't get excused. We actually placed because it was early in the season and a schooling show. I was more successful with my previous three horses

Oh, yeah, that's one of the ways we used to drill: with the master calling out the moves. Or he's tell us the drill ONE TIME and you had to remember the sequence.
