After hunting for girls undershirts to modify, I've decided to try making some. Just not sure where to find the fabric. I'm looking to make tank undershirts in a white cotton knit, probably a rib knit. Not a like a boys undershirt fabric, but a closer fitting, clingier knit. There are lots of knits online, but I'm not sure where to find what I'm looking for. I would like a high quality soft fabric. Any suggestions of what particular fabric to look for and where? We are hopefully going to NYC next weekend, any suggestions of what stores to check there would be great also. Thanks,
Mary

I have made my own T-shirst for many years out of silk noil and love the feeling asell as the wonderful colors. I first wash the fabric in hot water to pre shrink and rid the over dye, followed by a hot dryer. I then iron smooth cut and sew. They are sooooo comfortable. I'm sure you could make tank tops. I don't like the feeling of knit. Kust a thought.

If you could find some knit fabric, just knit in a tube of the right dimensions, and not open flat knit instead with a selvage edge to it, then you would not even have to put side seams into them at all, so that would make them, that much quicker to sew, and also even more comfortable as an undershirt possibly?

I have seen lots of nice thin and flexible and soft silk knits that would make great underware shirts, and that would keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter, but most times it seems to be at least about $18 per yard, and so kind of pricy and also have not seen that knit in round tube like form on the bolt. But maybe you might see something like that there.

I've made pajamas with the organic cotton jersey at Fabric.com that feel very soft. It's manufactured in the USA. They have a baby rib knit that is medium weight you could order a sample of.

I just saw white rib knit fabric on Michaels (a PR sponsor). I'll look to see if it's still there. eta - not there - my bad!

It's at FabricMart:

I don't like the feeling of knit either: smooth, cool wovens for me. Larry, you're using a basic over-the-head tank top pattern?

How are you finishing off the edges at collar and armpits?

Now I want some woven undershirtz!

j.

NYC STORES

Here is a SEW-ER'S GUIDE TO NYC but you should call the stores before you go to make sure they're open.

Fabric knit in the tube in the correct width would be perfect! But hard to find. These would be going under a body brace, once I modify them to have a open hole for her g-tube. That's been a whole other thread already. I'm not sure a woven would work. I love them personally, but these need to get pulled over the head and arms of someone who has stiff joints. Ripping would likely occur. I've thought of wicking fabrics, but I wasn't sure. The undershirt both protects her skin from the brace and absorbs perspiration from sweating. If it would be as effective or better then the cotton it could be a winner. As for NYC, I know not everything is open on Saturday. I was checking the Fashion Center to see who is open.
Any suggestions for a good pattern? Would be a girls 16 or a misses xs/s. Some of the fabrics you linked looked promising. Always love the good ideas I get here. Silk question-would it wash well? As in washer/dryer? These will be abused and heavily washed.
Mary
