Has anyone used homespun fabric to make clothing? I'm thinking of using it to make a couple of shirts for fall. I did a search before posting and didn't see much about homespun. I know it's a loose weave fabric, so I don't know how it will do as a shirt.

I've used it on a quilt, but not for clothing.

I've used it for elastic waist shorts for my guys. They're nice for summer and seam to hold up for a couple of years. I think it would do well as a shirt.

As a ShirtMaker by profession, I have used "homespun" fabrics for shirts I have designed and sewn for some of my clients.

While it is not my favorite fabric for shirtmaking because it ravels so easily....it does produces a nicely soft and comfortable shirt.

Here are a few things to consider--

--Pre-wash/dry the Homespun Fabric *twice* to get ALL the "shrink" out The second time you do not need to use soap...just get the fabric uniformly wet (I usually do this in my laundry sink, or right in the washer. Wring out or drain out some of the water, then "spin" out rest in the washer) ....and dry the homespun fabric in the dryer again.
***If you plan to use a fusible interfacing, do NOT use fabric softener during the pre-wash...use it afterwards when you wash the finished shirt, if you want to.***

--Use a softer/lighter interfacing than what is used for a classic menswear shirt.

--Be sure to clean-finish your exposed seams by felling them or by using a serger. Or at the very least...trim the seams to 3/8"and zig-zag the raw edges....and then if you want to--press the seams towards the back, and top-stitch 1/8" to 1/4" away from the seam line with short stitches.

What is homespun? I found an Amish link that sells it.

As I understand it, homespun is cotton fabric whose patten (usually plaid) comes from being woven with dyed fibers, not from being printed on like quilting material.

I find it in Joann's near the quilting fabric.
