My husband wants a quilt

We have a leather sofa in there and it gets rather cold (room's in the basement). I have tons of flannel I can use for it. But going to find a quilt as you got type as I'm done wrestling even a twin sized quilt through the machine as I do no hand quilting. Unless of course I could talk him into the purple Pfaff or the Janome Horizon. Both are very unlikely lol. Well off to look for blocks etc. ------ quiltingwolf.blogspot.com

No quilting of large pieces, soft and cuddly, warm and cozy, what more can he ask for? I make them for my sons and they love them. I put flannel on top and denim on the bottom, no batting. Buy spring loaded snippers for the ragging. Date: 8/28/12 11:57 AM Yup - best man quilt ever. No batting just 3 layers of flannel and he'll be plenty warm. And if you want to cheat even more don't do blocks - do strips! 8" strips cut the length you want. "Quilt" them by sewing randomly down the middle in any pattern or nonpattern you'd like, just avoid the outer 1' where you will be seaming them. Sew the strips together, snip the seam allowances, throw in the washer and drier and Voila! A warm man quilt. ------ Sewing: A creative mess is better than tidy idleness. ~Author Unknown

As I said tired of wrestling. I did find a method with sashing I think would work ok with this and not upset the design too much however it's a lot of hand sewing and I can't hand sew due to thumb spur so I was think of doing it in reverse and sewing down in front and make it part of the design. Well off to look for blocks etc. All this sounds like a great idea; the quilt and the new machine. Both would be a win-win. He stays warm and you are more comfortable when doing your projects. I would do a pleasing design just in case (in the future) you want the quilt for other than a "man cave".

Really? What do you mean Snip the seam allowances? I really like this idea and it could work well for my husband as well as hers. ------ Quilting is relaxing to me. That means your seam are sewn about 1/2 - 3/4" and they stick out all on the same side of the quilt. So if you made 8" strips (probably 6 or 7 of them) they would end up 6 1/2" wide strips that are just cut to the length you want the quilt. The strips are done in 3 layers- all flannel. So the seams have 6 layers of flannel sticking up. You just slash them perpendicular to the seams almost to the stitching line. You can do the same technique at the top and bottom too after sewing a row of stitches 1/2 3/4" from the edge. After washing and drying they will form a fringe- although I often have to help mine a bit. Stitching down the middle of the 3 layer sandwiched 8" strips before sewing the strips together would just hold the fabric together in the center a bit- sort of like quilting it. Is this any clearer? Way more triangles then I realized even though doing a speed method still lots of triangles lol. I got part of one block done. Wanted to get one block done to test my color scheme. Still trying to decide how to quilt this. I really don't want to fool with big backing etc. My house is small and has very small rooms so it's a hassle when trying to lay out the quilt sandwich which is another reason for want to quilt as I go. ------ quiltingwolf.blogspot.com
