Date: 8/28/12 5:16 PM I have dressed as Carmen Miranda more than once. When my husband moved into our apartment a previous tenant had left a Carmen Miranda hat made out of a cloche hat form with a bit of plastic fruit sewn on. I added lots more plastic fruit from the toy department of Woolworth's and cardboard toy boxes of grocery products ( I particularly remember a two or three inch box of cut-rite wax paper) a friend gave me some old stuffed birds that I added to the hat at some point. the cheap hollow plastic fruit is easy to sew on and light to wear. I wore a sleeveless red leotard and a length of gold lame tied into a sarong...tons of makeup ( an ex sister in law was a beauty queen, I tried to lay the make up thick just like she did, my husband kept sending me back to add more layers of make-up. it must have worked, little kids who saw me that night stopped to stare at me and tell me that I was beautiful .. I think I would have made most drag queens look restrained) and most importantly, lots of attitude. Then I adjusted it to fit my head with the "adjustment strip" in the back of the hat. I covered it with fabric to look like a turban and hot glued the fabric in place. Then I glued the plastic fruit on the top. Somebody mentioned toy fruit-which is a really great idea, because I had an awful time finding a plastic banana. I asked everyone I knew if they had a spare plastic banana. One of my neighbors found one somewhere for me.I was thrilled.
