Buttonhole Placement Vertical or Horizontal?

Should they be vertical or horizontal? The pattern of the blouse that I am making tells me to make them horizontal but on all of the store bought blouses that I own the buttonholes are vertical! Is there a difference and should I care? Man, it took me forever to find buttons for this blouse....I just want to finish it and wear it already but this buttonhole question is nagging at me and holding me up from making the buttonholes! Any help would be appreciated! Thanks, Sherry

I would go with a blouse you like and the way the buttonholes look. Keep in mind though that you can get more horizontal pulling with a vertical buttonhole if the blouse is a tighter style-an horizontal buttonhole is more stable so the blouse doesn't pull at the buttonhole. If you are not familiar with your machine and its buttonholer, you should practice on scrap so you know how to line up the fabric for even buttonholes. I know from experience that it is not fun to rip out buttonholes because the spacing is off-lol. HTH

You could try wearing it just pinned both ways to try to see what you like better. But, if your actual button's that you picked out for it, have a rather large shank built into them, instead of just holes for the thread to go though, then I think they probably should go crosswise and not up and down.
