Singer 201-2 & Singer Brand Packaged Bobbins....Help!

The machine didn't have a bobbin when I got it. I got mine from Sew Classic & they fit just fine. The ones I got Dritz brand did not fit well & also seemed to affect the stitch. Size 66 metal from Sew Classic seem to work the best for me. I hoard them! (I occasionally buy/sell vintage machines and collect the bobbins and accessories that come with them.) Once I actually collected enough that I sold off some extras on eBay and they went fast. You can always check there for ORIGINAL bobbins. Actually, duh, I looked in the accessory box & voila 4 shiny old bobbins. They are shaped differently....slightly smaller in diameter, and less curved. They don't fit my 201's bobbin winder, though. Hole is too small. Not too big a deal, I can wind them on my modern Necchi. That seems unfortunate, though. The duds fit on the bobbin winder. I bought a replacement bobbin case for my Featherweight machine and I thought my machine was going to fall apart. The clickity clack and the 1 or 2 stitches my machine tried to make only to look underneath the fabric to see a big thread ball mess. I was SO upset. So I took my bobbin case out of my other 221 machine and everything worked perfectly on the 2nd machine. That taught me a lesson to buy vintage original parts if at all possible. I compared the two bobbin cases side by side. The repro had notches and gouges out of the side of it, rough milling, thin metal out of round, not a smooth working latch, plus it was not machined exactly as the original. The original was smooth working and very nicely milled. I would NEVER again buy a reproduction bobbin case. I found a nice vintage bobbin case on ebay for a very reasonable price, actually cheaper than the repro one. Hope this helps!

One person stated a common problem was that the bobbin tire would wear out on these machines & have to be replaced. When I got my featherweight that was the only thing that needed repair. This person suggested winding bobbins on a seperate bobbin winder instead. I can't remember which one he used but I have a Simplicity Sidewinder that cost about $30, is alot easier as well as faster & cheaper then replacing the bobbin winder in your machine. I also use it for other sewing machines when I'm in a hurry because it's so much easier & winds a tight bobbin.Just have to watch it as it winds too much thread on the bobbin for my Pfaff so I stop it before it stops automatically.

Something is not right with this. Some of the new bobbins I had picked up didn't seem to fit well on the bobbin winder post but worked ok in the machine. I'm another that got a bobbin winder (deluxe simplicity) and like it as all but my featherweight in these vintage machines use the class 66 and I wind off factory cones at times. You aren't by chance filling the bobbin too much. Will the bobbin empty fit easily or is it a tight fit empty? I get bobbins from sew classic also as I got a bad few mixed in the ones I got off the store rack.

Bobbin Winder Tire on Sew Classic Yes, a Sidewinder is handy to have, but no way is it cheaper than replacing a bobbin winder tire. (Featherweights don't have a tire, though, are you talking about replacing the entire bobbin winder?) Nor is it necessarily faster since on some of your vintage Singers you can wind your bobbins while you sew if you have an extra spool of thread. It's the peg the bobbin goes on.....the original bobbins that actually work in my machine don't fit on the winder. The Joann/Singer bobbins won't even fit in the machine with no thread. I'll get some bobbins from Sew Classic and see if the hole is big enough for the winder peg and fit in the machine, too.
