For me its Simplicity 2648. Fits me great, goes together easily, lots of ways to make each dress from that pattern to look different.

I had to look at Simplicity 2648 and thought it would be a dress that would only flatter a size 2. I looked at the reviews and saw that it seems to be a universally flattering pattern.

I'm adding it to my wish list!

My favorite is M5893. It was pretty quick, and I plan to make more.

Mine is definitely 2648 although I won't be making it again for awhile (I made 5 in July for the One Pattern contest). I found it works in lots of fabrics-my favorite fabric in the contest was the knit jersey. If I do it again (and I might) it will be in a knit and I think I would get rid of the waist seam by joining the pattern pieces before cutting out. It is super easy to fit and sew.
edited to add a PS-I think there is a little black dress contest this fall-I think this pattern would work great for that.

Jaime Christina's Mission Maxi.
I'm not a frilly dress wearer (I don't tend to wear dresses often), so I really appreciate the shaped and clean lines of her tank dress. It has great options as a tank, skirt, maxi dress, shorten to a mini dress, or my favorite long dress with godet. It is sleeveless so it needs a layer in cooler months, but still a great dress you can make as sporty or formal as you want depending on fabric choice. I think it's great for beginners. It's an easy sew even though it is for knits.

Do you mean maxis? or something like that? knit or other types of fabric? I just cut out Simplicity 2635. Several people here have recommended it. I made it out of rayon challis. Maybe when I finish it I will do a review.

I like this dress pattern and have made it as a long dress, a short dress, and a top-

My goto jersey dress is an older Burda Mag one 05-2007-123, which has a gathered bust and across the shoulders, and all eedges are simply interfaced, turned and stitched down. A one hour dress. Great if you can get your hands on a copy 05-2007-123 reviews
For a maxi, also an older pattern NL6185 in the v-neck. Actually this is the only maxi I wear.
