For some reason I just have no patience shopping for patterns, either online or in person. My eyes just glaze over and every tiny "imperfection" makes me want to give up.

So I need a pattern for work tops and I do have a long list of criteria. I hope those of you who seem to be expert pattern finders will bear with me!

- any neckline is fine, but it needs to be modest. I can add modesty panels if needed, though, as long as the pattern will accommodate one. I work with babies, babies pull on tops and I do not like being exposed!
- gotta have sleeves. At least an elbow length short sleeve or longer
- has to be FBA-able or sized to not need one.
- knit, for sure. Again, working with babies, it has to be comfortable, moveable and very, very washable.
- preferably a Big Four or Burda that I can grab at Fabricland. I am too impatient to wait and my (very, very low limit) credit card is maxed right now.
- no button fronts.
- I am somewhere in the 12/14 petite size range.

Thanks!

Would you consider a downloadable pattern? One of the top t shirts of all time (a Jalie) was discontinued and is now available as a download.

What kind of bottoms do you wear at work?

Consider looking at the "Best Patterns of 2011" and "Best Patterns of 2010" (go even further back if you don't find anything but you risk having the pattern be OOP) and pick a top from those.

Do you have a favorite PR member whose sewing you admire? Check out her reviews and grab one of her tops.

I really understand what you're going through; I get really overwhelmed when trying to look at patterns especially on line. I finally carved out a few hours to look at pattern books in a fabric store last week and none of them spoke to me. I have a wish list going in my phone now but just about every one I like is OOP.

This one was a "best of" or Hall of Famer (sorry I can't remember what year - I just remember I bought it from that list) and it's still in print (it will also provide you with a knit cardigan pattern you can use when the weather gets cooler):

I just made Silhouette Patterns #312 -Giorgio's Top. It's super easy to make, stylish, and as comfy as your favorite tee. I posted a review for it.

Thanks Mary. I really like the look of that and I do have some sweater knit kicking around here that might be made up some time. I also like the center back seam for my sway back.

Patty - I like your top but not the pattern picture, so that really shows the value of PR reviews!

I highly recommend V8536. The pattern envelope is down right ugly so don't go by that!

It's a basic knit top w/2 neckline choices plus a very modest cross over neckline. I haven't made the cross over due to unfavorable reviews. The only alterations that I made was a sloped shoulder. It does have a dart but I rotated it out. FBA friendly!

I would second that-this is a great pattern and my go to T-shirt pattern. So far, I have made all of the versions 2-3 times including the crossover version. and have two more cut and ready to sew. It's such a basic pattern and sews up quickly, and I get many compliments on my shirts.

OK - I have pattern numbers in my phone and also really looking at the Jalie. I haven't sewn any of their patterns but the reviews are so good. I don't mind all the taping together, but must make sure the printer has lots of paper in it before I start!

Mary - I forgot to answer re: pants. We wear casual pants like khakis, jeans (nice looking) and some even wear yoga pants. It would be a perfect job for wearing scrubs and I actually bought a cute scrub top thinking it would work, but even with Kermit the frog all over it, it just looked too clinical to me. I gave it to DD who works in a nursing home. Even though she is nearly a foot taller than me, it was long enough, so it fits.

I was wondering about scrubs but what you said makes sense. I could see where the kids would think they were at the doctor's office!

Since work takes so much of one's day, you deserve Jalie shirts!!

I love threads like these. It's hard for me to pick patterns for me, but it's fun to visualize what would be great for someone else. Then it gives me ideas for me too.
