Wondering if I need to use a walking foot with sewing
with knits on a designer 1

I never have. When I use the sewing advisor, I don't put in knit fabric, or the seam defaults to a stretch stitch. I never use stretch stitches, I think they cause problems, like adding too much thread to the seam and poking too many holes in the knit. I prefer a basic zigzag.
If you seam is wavy lower the pressure on the presser foot.
