Date: 9/5/12 4:47 PM I will be in Europe from Sept 18-Oct 26 and would like to buy a few pattern magazines would especially like to find a Marfy.
We will be in Paris, Amsterdam, London and many smaller towns in Belgium, Southern Germany, Switzerland, Northern Italy and France. Do I look in Bookstores or fabric stores or both

Date: 9/5/12 4:57 PM In Germany, you get pattern magazines mainly at newsstands, and as a rule of thumb, newsstands at main railway stations carry by far the greatest selection (e.g. including the Spanish Patrones or the Italian La Mia Boutique). On rare occasions, you can find Dutch magazines Knipmode and/or My Image in fabric stores but that's like winning the lottery.

I found the newsstands Presse und Buch at Munich railway station to be particularly good. There are several, so ask for the one with the pattern mags.------
Taking in is happier than letting out.

Date: 9/6/12 3:21 AM Well between Southern Germany and Northern Italy is a small country called Austria. If you stop there, you can find Burda and Diane in every grocery store magazine stand. Diane has mainly "learn-to-sew" types of fashion though.
If you go to any regular book store, they have several international sewing magazines.
It just occurred to me - I'm not sure you'll have any time to get to a bookstore. I think you mentioned something like 6 countries in 8 days? Your best bet is the train stations then.

I rarely see Idée Couture which is basically La Mia Boutique in French. You might get a lot more in Paris though. I go to London quite often, Burda is often in WH Smiths, but not much else of interest. The specialist fashion magazine and book shop Franks has closed I think. ------

Date: 9/6/12 4:58 AM Wholeheartediy agree, this one is fab! So many previous Patrones editions! For those who are in the area: this newsstand is a bit hidden. Go to the platforms 21-23, turn around (so they are wakign away from them) straight into a little aisle. The 2nd store on the left is the newsstand with greatest sewing magazine selection I know in Germany.
On the other hand, Southern Germany can also mean the area of Freiburg or even the Lake Constance region. The newsstand at Freiburg's station has a pretty good selection as well, including La Mia Boutique but no Patrones.
To my knowledge, in Lake Constance region there's no such place like in Munich or Freiburg. But the ''usual stuff'' isn't that bad: burda, burda plus, burda easy (just released), Ottobre, Diana, Meine Nähmode (which carries many (older) Simplicity and/or New Look patterns; in a rather limited number of sizes but still!).

Totally agree. Apart from Burda, it's extremely difficult (bordering on impossible?) to buy pattern magazines except over the internet.------

Date: 9/6/12 10:18 AM I was in Italy in the spring and prior to leaving, I contacted Marfy to see how to purchase a catalogue and patterns while I was there. I was told that Marfy is only available through subscription or online ordering. In the end, I prepaid for a catalogue and the patterns I had pre-selected online and they were shipped to my hotel and held for me until I arrived. A little complicated but still far less expensive than shipping them to my home. |

Date: 9/6/12 10:46 AM My Italian friend searched high and low for me when she was home, often leaving empty handed from newsstands because they had just sold whatever they had. She did find one copy for me but it took awhile and she ended up picking it up in a larger city. ------
