Sewaholic Renfrew 1201 knit top how to sew the v-neck

Since it is a 5/8" seam, I constructed the neckband and then was planning to sew a 1/2" seam an inch on either side of the body of the v-top to stabilize and then cut up to this seam, but not through it and place together and ease the shirt body and neckband together. Is this correct or is there a better way? I've only made Jalie v-neck tops before and in a different manner.
