Is my fabric wide enough for Vogue 1310?

Vogue 1310

I have just over 5 yards of black crepe back silk satin in the stash which is 44 inches wide. I was thinking of buying Vogue 1310 to work on the skirt for my mother to wear on her birthday, but the pattern calls for 60 inch width fabric. I am concerned that because the skirt (or seemingly at the very least the bottom panel of it) is cut on the bias, I won't be able to cut it out.

It's such a great pattern for a semi-formal Sydney summer evening, with the right air of polish and relaxednes.s.

You have the perfect fabric for it. I haven't seen a fabric layout for this pattern, but I would guess you'd need to piece it.

Can you add a seam at the back? It'll make the bias hang better anyway.

As SewRuth says in her review, "There's only one seam in this skirt that spirals around the body".

To widen the fabric enough, I suspect that piecing, as Nancy says, would wind up being easier. Piecing has long been an acceptable technique for long bias skirts. You can see a good example here, especially if your computer lets you zoom waaaaay in to the knee/thigh area.

Thanks Nancy, mmcp and Elona for all your help! I have finally received the pattern. The poly fabric I have for my muslin is 60", so I will have a go assembling the skirt and having an idea about how it should look, before I tackle the piecing. That beautiful bridal picture gives me confidence that it will look all right.
